French failed again

Th Olympic movement is one of the few organisations which actually has some decent ideals, shame it's dogged by so much politics :(

Burnsy

Everything is political, especially something involving the whole world. The Tibetans need a voice in their corner and good on the French to show the rest of the world how it’s done.

I wished I'd paid more attention to this event yesterday. I thought it was just going to be a sickening parade of fame hungry celebs carrying the torch. Instead I missed out on a running battle through the streets of London. :(

It certainly made for a bizarre sight when I turned on the news at 4am... Konnie Huq surrounded by a bunch of Chinese heavies and half the Metropolitan Police Force, which then suddenly degenarates in to a massed brawl. Very confusing. :D

And now the French have managed to make an ass of themselves over this as well.

Orderly protests achieve nothing.

Neither do violent ones these days. :(

Whose idea was it to give the damn olympics to China anyway? Obviously not a single shred of hindsight whatsoever when the commitee made their decision. I'm all for this torch relay being scuppered, interrupted, delayed, sabotaged, the whole lot. The world needs to tell China it will not condone its poor record on human rights and treatment.

The Olympics is the biggest waste of the tax payers' money I can think of.
I loathe everything to do with it, and the fact that the torch was extinguished makes me think:

Actully, several games have made a profit and almost every country which hosts them show an economic boost of significant magnitude - so to say the games are a waste of the taxpayers money is utter nonsense.

Which countries have done well out of the Olympics?
The Los Angeles Games in 1984 were the first to make a profit since 1932, scooping a $1.4bn windfall for the city. Atlanta in 1996 also made a profit. However, the real benefits of hosting the Games are often to the host country’s economy. South Korea’s economy grew 12% in the year of the Seoul Olympics. The Sydney Games in 2000 boosted the Australian economy by $3.3bn. But perhaps the most successful Olympics of modern times were the Barcelona Games in 1992, which marked the start of an economic and cultural renaissance for the Catalan capital.

Why do you "loathe everything to do with it"? Could you elucidate please?

Personally, I think the Olympic games is an awesome event in so many ways. The spectacle, the prowess of the competitors, the organisation, the logistics - everything is done on a massive scale and I admire the people who organise, marshall and participate in such a remarkable event. Politics aside, it is one of the most spectacular (and popular) events in the world.

Wow, yeah, uniting the world through err 'sport'. Right. Just a bigging-up parade of the host country. It is something which I firmly do not believe in. This olypmics coming up is loathsome. Why? Because of the fact that we're celebrating humanity (and that is in theory what this whole farce is about itsnt it?) in a country which has no human rights, tortures its own people and does anything but celebrate humanity. Hope those althetes who've been training don't get effected by the smog either lol.
When you see how bad things are socially in China and then have an event which is meant to promote good relations between countries and humanity itself it is just so very hollow, contrived and politically motivated.

ON the bright side 'elucidate' is a rather nice word Bigstan.
