French Films

People have mentioned some great films already but try Belleville Rendez-Vous, it's an animated film and is amazing. Nominated for loads of awards including 2 Oscars (didn't win though) so highly recommended

I've been meaning to check that out at some point, but was put off because it's animated. However I really should add it to my DVD list for next month.

As for La Haine... ugh. I seem to be one of the only people to find it overrated and dull. I wouldn't sit through it again.

Just thought of another one - Dans Ma Peau. Yummy - self harm! You could also check out Trouble Every Day if cannibalism is your thing, but it's not that well done.

Brice de Nice - stupidly fun and silly, a cult movie in France. Some classic moments in it. (of course made even better by being filmed in Nice, where I used to live :p )

Amelie is one of my favourite films ever. I don't know why though, it's got some kind of quality that transcends the story or the actors or the characters...

36 Quai des Orfèvres (36) is a pretty good film too. French police drama. :)

I've also bought the City of Lost Children ("La Cité des enfants perdus" according to IMDB) but haven't had a chance to watch that yet.

Etre et Avoir is another film that was recommended by a friend (french girl).

Two French films I loved which haven't been mentioned yet are-

Etre et Avoir and Les Choristes (The Chorus.

Etre et Avoir is a documentary centred around one small school in rural France, sounds rubbish :p but seriously, check it out it's really good.

Edit- Etre et Avoir has been mentioned :p

Definately my face after the first iirc scene :p

As well as the above, some older classics:

Rififi - the original heist movie. The actual robbery is a brilliant sequence.

Les Diaboliques (The Fiends) - not to be confused with the awful Sharon Stone remake. One of the creepiest films you will ever see, and with a stunning ending.

The Wages of Fear - one of the great tension films.

Of newer films not mentioned: the Gerard Depardieu version of Cyrano de Bergerac.

But I agree about Spirals on TV - catch the repeats which are just starting.

Another vote for "I Stand Alone" if you liked the style and direction of irreversible then this film is by the same director Gaspar Noe and was made a couple of years before.

The film is about the guy from the 1st scene in irreversible who is a jobless butcher and has serious issues with life, the thing I liked about the film is it has about 20% of spoken speech and the other 80% is what he is thinking which really gets you inside his mind.

La Haine is good but make sure you get the version with proper subtitles.

C'est arrivé près de chez vous (Man Bites Dog) - excellent film, not one to watch with the missus though.

La Haine - Just great cinema, really punchy and lively (get the good subtitles).
Man Bites Dog - Good too, though i found you reach a point where you do get a bit kind of fatigued by the camera work and content. Defo not one to watch for easy-going Sunday afternoon viewing.
Breathless - The epitome of French New Wave hip, so cool if that's your thing
Swimming Pool - A brilliant indie film with Charlotte Rampling... well worth a look.
