Frequency and doubt over 5950x

Hi friends,

I have the need to create this topic, since a few weeks ago I bought a 5950x. First of all I want to clarify that the CPU is accompanied by an X570 Aorus Master, 128GB RAM, Noctua NH-D15, and PSU Evga 850w. The BIOS version is F33i.

My problem is that when I start the computer in the morning after having it shut down overnight, I run the 3ds Max software and render a scene. After rendering for 10 to 15 seconds, the equipment automatically resets itself. After rebooting, I can render smoothly throughout the day, but the first render of the day is the one that is giving me the headaches. The temperature doesn't go above 65 ° or 70 ° while rendering, and I also do not work with OC since I do not need it at the moment.

Secondly, which also has me worried, is that when I execute or save a large file (500MB or 1GB), from Ryzen Master I can see that only 1 core is the one that works at approximately 4.6Ghz. Shouldn't all 16 cores work simultaneously in these cases?

Your 1st problem sounds like the cpu is on the edge of stability. When it’s cold it will boost more. Best scores are when it’s cold.

2nd problem. There will be a single thread responsible for the save generally but depends on how it’s coded. Even though rendering will be across multiple threads it’s all got to be synchronised back for when the data writes out to disk. Unless it’s in separate files.

The problem of the CPU being on the edge of stability was not clear to me, what would it mean? The CPU temperatures I understand to be correct as they don't go above 65 ° normally.

Are you saying only one core is being used when redering ?

When I render it uses the 16 cores correctly, my question was about the execution and saving of files, where it does use only one core, and in the previous comments they told me that it is correct.

My only doubt now is because in the first render of the day, the computer restarts automatically, and then works normally for the rest of the day.

If you are not using OC etc then I would go into your board and change the LLC profile to something a bit more aggressive. I don’t know what gigabyte board is but their LLC setting has picture showing you which each profile does. You want one that is flat-ish.

you crash most likely because the motherboard Vcore is drooping too much. Though I am not sure why it doesn’t do it regularly.

Like mentioned above, must be the low temperature. CPU feels it can boost higher at low temperature and thats the only time it hits unstable modes.
There is a likelyhood it could be fixed by adjusting LoadLine Calibration.
 
It is a little odd, when you start your computer up from cold, can you do other things without it crashing, browse internet, watch a YouTube, play a game if you have any etc? And would it crash then?

Or it it just when you do your rendering?

Might be worth try a cold boot, load straight into some benchmark and see if it does it.

Edit: and say it doesn't crash web browsing, you tube etc, then you try your rendering after your PC has been on for a whe, would it crash then when you try and do the rendering?

When I start the computer and do other activities, for example surfing the internet with many windows open, there is no problem at all. I also did the test of having the computer turned on for most of the day without rendering, and anyway when I render, it restarts. I am wondering if it may be a 3ds Max problem.

To check, I also did a test of starting the computer in the morning and doing rendering tests with Cinebench, and it worked without any problems.

I think I will uninstall 3ds Max, and reinstall it again to test if that may be the fault, although it seems weird to me. Secondly, I will try to investigate and modify the parameters that they recommended to me!

In the event viewer, I get 5 critical errors in the last 7 days.

Event ID: 41
Origin: Kernel-Power
Registration: System

Undoubtedly that could be the number of resets in the last week.
Yeah the kernel power are the shutdowns but if you look just before or after they happen it may give you clue what's causing it, especially if it's an event 18 or 19.

Open event viewer and go to custom views then administrative events then find the kernel power criticals and see which other errors are just before or after.

I could see in the custom views, that after the "critical" failure 41 of Kernel-Power, you can also see the failure "error" with the ID 18 - Origin: WHEA-Logger.

Do you think that is definitely the problem of the reset? Am I in serious trouble?

This. My 5800X had WHEA errors at random points, until I ran the Core Tuner (or whatever it's called, not at PC at the mo...) and it indicated excessive vdroop under load.
Set LLC to level 3 (medium) and not a single issue since. Also seems to have fixed periodic idle blue screens- again caused by insufficient voltage.
I'd set both CPU and SoC LLC to the same level.

Edit. Made a right mess of that quote, but hey-ho :)
