Trying to setup a new HP 8.1 machine for a mate and he has asked me to put o81the win10 upgrade.

But, it's one of those 32gig ssd units and it doesn't have room for the upgrade files. Tried adding a usb stick to give it working room but usb 2 speeds aren't up to it. Been about 3 hours and the things aren't happening.

Can i run an oem install of 10 and have it pick up the embeded serial on the mobo?

Thanks.

You'll need to pull the 8.1 OEM key from the BIOS with something like Nirsoft Produkey then install with the latest Windows 10 image. The latest image allows you to use a previous license key.

Assuming it's an HP Stream you know there is a microsd slot on the side if you have one handy? You'll also find that it'll be missing a driver for something after installing windows 10 unless it's something that's been added to the newer installers, if so I have the correct drivers handy I can let you have, just pop a note in here and I can share them via dropbox to save you the grief of trying to find the correct ones, it was a bit of a pain.

Not with Windows 10, it will automatically pick up the key from the BIOS and activat on installation. But this worked for me with the November update of Windows 10.

As BuToNz says, grab the key using Produkey, download the latest 1511 image, install it entering the 8.1 key when prompted and it will activate fine. There's no need to do the in-place upgrade with 1511 - genuine 7, 8 and 8.1 keys will be accepted from the off.

Thanks all, all done now.

Dano, they seem to have sorted the driver issue, many thanks for the offer.
