Hi,

I'll be upgrading my motherboard and CPU over the next few days, am i correct in thinking that i HAVE to do a fresh install of windows after major hardware changes? I see some people say no, you just need to reactive windows. I also see others that say a fresh install of windows is a must. Can someone clear this up for me please?

Thanks

I don't think it's a must, well let me just say I don't do a fresh install after changing a CPU or Motherboard, maybe I'm doing it wrong but I've never had issues when reusing my old OS drive :)

Windows 10 does a very good job of sorting itself out after major hardware changes. You've not got much to lose by trying it (you'd obviously have backups in place anyway).

With the earlier version of Windows, I'd always start again with a clean install.

Just make sure you are logged in to windows with a Microsoft account, that way if it loses activation (likely with a motherboard swap) then you can just run the activation troubleshooter and reactivate it.
