It's an app that uses the sensors in the phone to calculate the figures based on your initial stat entries (age, height, weight, stride length etc). Seems to be accurate give or take a few. You can customise the sensitivity and pace duration before it starts counting.
I have it set to the default 1 stride but it seems to do error checking anyway so if I have the phone on my desk and pick it up it won't count that as it starts to count after actual walking - seems to know when you're walking or simply moving.
Tempted to get hold of an ANT+ device to connect up but this is only a casual checking really.
