I think it's due to the rarity of it, I think only the Russian government has some? Even so there's still a chance so I'd dispute that figure too.

Nonce-sense indeed, since smallpox was eradicated in 1973. So even if the fatality rate is 25%, there's a 0% contraction rate so zero chance of dying from it!

It's been eradicated for years, save a couple of samples held in labs. (Although I think some people were a bit fidgety about what the Soviets had done with their old samples of the stuff. Either way, there was an effective vaccine and it probably wouldn't be too much technological bother to make it again.)

A quick bit of googling suggests that it hasn't been eradicated so there is a chance of an outbreak, albeit a small chance. And the virus occurred naturally so surely it's not beyond the realms of possibility that it could become a problem in the future.

There's a massive amount of vaccine kicking around atm, after terror scares.

That and small pox now only exists in certain research and bioweapons labs.


And there is a zero % chance of it breaking out of there as they spend hundreds of millions of dollars on them making sure they are safe.
