Wonder if you could actually get Channel 5 back in the days of analogue with one of these bad boys...

This behemoth is the now defunct Soviet Duga 3 antennae site, located near the infamous abandoned city of Pripyat in the western Ukraine. The 900 metre long monster was built as part of the Soviet ballistic missile launch early warning system during the Cold War, and first went online in July 1976. The site, essentially a massive over-the horizon radar system produced a constant tapping sound at 10Hz on the Shortwave band that could be heard worldwide, interfering in radio broadcasts and even being picked up as background noise during telephone calls. This distinctive sound gave rise to it's nickname in the west, "Russian Woodpecker". Thanks to advances in technology however, the Duga 3 array went offline in 1989, replaced by far less intrusive satellites.
