Who can tell me what this cartoon was called? I remember it used to be on at about 05:30-06:00 on Channel 4, I used to get up especially to watch it.

Exactly right!
It was called "Once Upon a Time...Life" (they had different 'Once Upon a Times').I used to collect the books...only got up to 20 though as they were £5.99 all that time ago, very expensive at the time every two weeks!
