Just watched the box set from start to finish. Even second time round like The Wire you get even more then the first time. What a show. But I know what you mean, it does have its moments where the characters thoughts fit the moment so well and I burst out laughing
The liquidators working on the roof of the power plant.
They could only stay up there for 40 seconds at a time so had to run up the stairs in lead suits then try and throw a shovel full of rubble back into the reactor through the hole in the roof.
Igor Kostin had to wrap his camera with lead and stayed up for several minutes, saying "The sacrifice of these men should never be forgotten" as his reason for exposing himself to hazardous levels of radiation (he has had to have several thyroid operations through out the years but is still alive)
The men sent up (liquidators) were simply, reservists from the army and had to make their own lead suits from scrap lead.
60,000 of the 800,000 liquidators have died.
Igor Kostin spent the following years photographing everything about the disaster including mutated apples, babies and 8 legged horses.
If you google image Igor Kostin you get quite a lot of images from Chernobyl I'd never seen before.
