You do realise the first image is before the Taliban, right? You think they'd get away wearing that otherwise? :o

Man, I love my new DSLR, I have wasted my life with compacts :'(

These shots were both taken five minutes ago hand held, at night by the dim lights of my room, in front of the glare of my monitor, which one is the compact and which is the DSLR? :p

That's actually the third image your talking about, but for reference that is the country pre-US involvement. Back in the seventies Afghanistan was an up and coming nation that was doing well on healthcare/education and women's right's, had it not been for US intervention it would be on or past the level of Brazil and Turkey today.

Their problem however was that their government was more friendly with the USSR that the USA which made them a de-facto enemy of the USA. Americas solution was to arm/train/fund Islamic fundamentalist insurgents to rebel against the government. This forced the USSR to send massive military support to aid its ally drawing them into "their own Vietnam". The rebels had many factions one of which became known as the Taliban, which later deposed another former rebel faction* to take control of the country.

*the same faction that is now back in control of Afghanistan.

thats a fairly large generalisation. I'd say its closer to the facts to say Afghanistan was unstable and the cold war superpowers just got involved way too much and ended up accelerating the process of wrecking the place. You've only got to take a look at the middle east now to see how readily they'll take up arms against each other which is probably in large part still fallout from the various European empires collapsing/mistakes after the end of WW2/cold war proxy wars etc etc.
