They were there to sing the chorus, yes, in exchange for being involved to "spread the message" to the generation that do not have attention span to sit in front of TV for 4 minutes and 50 seconds and is incapable of reading more than 140 characters at once.
In truth I suppose - desperate times, desperate measures. When announced artists like Adele don't pick up the phone on the day, when you have to duplicate artists in verses, when verse artists are too busy to stick around for chorus, when stars fly into town for the same TV show to be featured first, solo...
