Sterling is a reference to the silver it was originally measured in. Dollar was originally based on silver then gold, to compare it now is a very reasonable measure.
Since Nixon there is no fixed link but the ratio is not pulled out of nowhere.
Theres the line of logic saying we have surpassed such things, these 'standards' are no longer relevant in a technological age. The other take would be history repeats, especially when its forgotten
