If you have room for either combination which would be preferable to most people here? Are there any cost savings in having an upright fridge freezer vs two separate appliances?

It always going to be cheaper to run one appliance.

Surely though what you need is entirely based on how much fridge and freezer space you need and whether you have the physical room for it.

If you have the space and requirement then a separate fridge and freezer can be very handy. Ours are 542 litres each and are identical in size, make and finish and whilst being aesthetically pleasing they also offer a factor of convenience which is hard to convey.

It is not cheaper to tun two separate appliances in this manner.

wouldn't mind one of those funny american style ones, good space in both without necessarily being the full width of two. Not for everyone though

American Style is awesome. Samsung fridges are pretty sick if you go that route.

If you have a massive family, you want separates. If you don't, go with fridge-freezer. Simple as.

We have a large, American style fridge freezer in the kitchen and a large chest freezer in one of our out buildings. We use the kitchen one for everyday frozen stuff (ready meals/chips/frozen veg etc) and the chest freezer for loaves of bread/meat/home made soups and for freezing game that I shoot.

Has anyone crunched the numbers on making back the cost of a chest freezer thanks to taking advantage of the supermarket offers that you can freeze?

Better to have separates if u can afford and have the space for them because then they each have their own systems. I.e the fridge wont ice up cos of the freezer system. Forgot the name im trying to explain but i think ud know what i mean.

Fridge/freezer and a chest freezer soon to be put in my newly delivered shed here.
This is for just 2 of us.

We got the chest freezer as we regularly buy bulk chicken at a large discount

We had a Haier fridge freezer where I used to live. The trouble is it didn't have separate temperature regulation for the freezer. This wasn't a problem most of the time, but in the winter it got so cold in our utility room that the fridge would click off all night causing the freezer to warm up.

If you're talking about getting them tall separate fridges and freezers where each one takes up the space of a normal combined fridge/freezer then in theory it would be better to just get 2 fridge-freezers so if one fails, you still have both cooling and freezing capability i.e. full redundancy.

The other thing to consider is if you get matching separate fridge and freezer, when one eventually breaks, you may not be able to get a matching one for replacement.

Just go American if you can :)

Go both :)

We have a Samsung American style freeze/freezer in the utility room with plumbed in water and ice.
In our garage we have a 300 litre Hotpoint chest freezer and in the kitchen a built in Bosch fridge with 150 litres of space.

Loads of space for ice creams :)

Seems like a lot of chest freezers require the ambient temperature to be above 10c, does this not make siting them in a garage difficult?
