Ok a little advice required please.

We have this fridge freezer
http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/househ...015apw-fridge-freezer-white-09919578-pdt.html

It is nearly 4 years old (will be in April) now there are no controls to alter the coldness of the freezer, but lately I have noticed things dont seem cold as they should be in, certainly the freezer section. A loaf of bread feels only part frozen for and example.
Now already it had a very poorly designed drip tray at the back of the appliance.
To you is this freezer breaking? is it worth me looking into a new one? if so can I have some recommendations.

The first thing I'd do is remove the subjectivity and pick up a £2-3 freezer thermometer.

Bread is very quick to defrost and I noticed on my older freezer that if I added a lot of meat, the ambient temperature of the freezer would creep slightly and the bread would soften. This was mostly down to me trying to ram more in to the freezer at once than it could cope with.

I'd grab the thermometer, look at your loading habits then go from there - if it is breaking, take in to the cost of repair vs getting a new one and decide where your cutoff for replacement is.

ok thanks i will get one :)

Where is the fridge freezer located? If its the room its in is too cold, the compressor won't kick in.

Four years old is no age for fridge freezer, I have Bosch fridge freezer,it has seperate compressors & controls for each section, & it must 10-12 years old, & still working perfectly, & it also lives in a warm kitchen.

Is the fridge side still working ok?

Most have one compressor which runs the Fridge and freezer, can you hear any fans kicking in.

Hi this fridge has electronic controls so ambient temps lower than 10oC don't affect it as much as mechanical stat one, got some things for you to check.

1) are you getting ice forming on bottom of freezer, if so drainage channel for defrost water is blocked and you have two option, leave it off for 48hrs with both fridge and freezer doors open or take back cover off in freezer section and defrost with hair dryer (dont stay in one position too long) or a steamer.

2) do you have frost building up on back wall of freezer below fan, if yes would indicate failure of either defrost heater, thermal cut ins/outs (very rare) or relay on pcb.

We have the version of this with a water cooler in the door or at least an almost identical one from the same manufacturer.

The defrost heater and drip tray heaters have most likely have failed (I measured ours and got > 10M Ohm Resistance). It will cost around £40 for the two along with a replacement defrost timer.

Take all the drawers out etc. and remove the back panel (2 screws and some pulling and swearing) and the coil will be full of ice.

Defrost it and you will see the heater (fine silver one on the evaporator and a flat tape one in the drip tray)

Remove them and replace with new ones. The coil heater is tricky as it runs round the back of the evaporator coil as well.

Defrost timer is in the back to the left of the compressor. There is a one way screw you can use to advance the timer if you want to try it.

So far I have just gone with manually defrosting it every three months or so now as finding time to swap the parts is proving problematic.

by the way both the above faults will show similar symptoms because the evaporator is getting blocked so the fan cant draw air though, basically no wind chill factor :D

Ian yours is slightly different to this one in the fact you have mechanical timer and stat, is your timer housing screwed to the back or does it hang down, if the later please contact beko as there was an issue with these as potential fire hazzard :)

I spoke to Beko and they basically said "it isnt in the serial number range. Not interested"

This was a 2009 model (Hmm.. bought Feb 2009 so maybe 2008 model) and has so far had 2 compressors under warranty and both defrost heaters have failed. I am now just manually defrosting it regularly as I reckon any repair will just go the same way.

Don't think the defrost heaters i could get through work would fit either. That and they would take the fuse out every time they were turned on.

Suspect it is probably a very similar fault however, with a faulty heater.

serial number will tell you production date first two numbers year, last two month :)

beko defrost heaters failing is quite rare, i'm scratching my head to remember last one i fitted on a fridge freezer, those timers however are a pain in the r's, could you put a photo of your timer up for me :)

Mine? Next time I drag it out from the units. Will be soon as the bread isn't freezing again.

Timer is working as I can measure Volts when it clicks in. Considering using a controller from work to replace it at the mo.
