A friend of a family member is using my address for their post.
He doesnt have a fixed address - no house and lives on a boat. Mail is addressed to him, but my house, street & postcode.

Will this have any negative affect on me / my credit rating? (other than junk mail and other post coming to me)

I am the home owner, just my name on the mortgage.

Thanks

I wouldn't let it happen, can open all sorts of stuff on your credit file depending what loans etc. they take out. Think they can also get tagged as a known person on your credit file, and if they have bad credit, it will impact yours.

If they are a friend of a family member, why they not using the family members adress, or maiboxesetc for 30 quid a month?

Yeah, I'd be having a serious one-way conversation with family member and said dosser to ensure this ceases immediately. I assume you never consented to this, OP?

I'd also be returning all mail to sender marked 'not known at this address'.

really need to know how this came to be the case to begin with?

as others have mentioned, i'd be very wary as you could in fact end up with a load of hassle. now if it's you friend and you're happy with that then fair enough but the wording of your post needs clarifying as it reads like it's some random someone in your family is friendly with and that would be a huge no no for me

The credit report aspect isn't really true - see https://www.experian.co.uk/consumer/guides/location-and-address.html

"Can the people I live with affect my credit score?
Not unless you’re ‘financially associated’. This means you’ve applied for joint credit together, such as a bank account or mortgage. If you do have joint finances with someone, they’ll be recorded on your credit report as your 'financial associate'."

However, if they end up owing money, and debt collectors have that address, or the police, it can cause a lot of pain and frustration down the line - even if technically you should come out unscathed. It would depend a lot on how much I trusted them.

This, any debt collectors will be going to known addresses. You’ll have a while bunch of faff with that.

Living on a boat - seemed like a good idea at the time.
It’s a great idea and can be a brilliant lifestyle especially in this post Covid work from anywhere world we now live in, if I was younger and had no kids I’d seriously consider it for a few years. There are plenty of solutions to the mail if you aren’t a total dosser.

This sounds like a long-term arrangement if he lives on a boat rather than just being temporarily between permanent residence. Also I imagine people living on boats can be harder to track down.

I used to work with someone who lived on a boat, nothing against it, but no randomer is using that as an excuse to send mail to my home, get a PO box or something.

My brother did this with my sister - he applied for credit cards etc, and stupidly she passed them onto him; que a lot of debt being racked up on said cards and bailiffs coming to her place.....

It's not worth the hassle imo - though it might not affect you in the long term, I'd imagine there might be an initial impact, whilst they ascertain who you are etc, if the worst were to happen and they did the same.
