Friend's laptop dying?

I thought this must be GPU related, but as it's loading and then going to black screen to start with it is possible to be a software failure.

One thing to start off with is taking the battery out, holding the power button seems to cure some issues with laptops relating to blackscreens.

I'd personally guess it's GPU related if he can't even get to the BIOS, I'd recommend trying to see if it will work on an external monitor, if it does then the screen has died if not then it's possible it's the GPU dying
 
Yea agree with Silenced, get an external monitor up and FN key between the two, see if you can get anything out of it. Seems like either a GPU issue or a monitor failure which is pretty common with laptops.
