Its time. I have had my Gtx 680 for three years and starting to find some games stuggling (Crysis 3, Gta 5, Shadow of Mordor etc) So was thinking of jumping to a 970 or 980.

Have the cash but not sure if its worth the jump or if the 980 is even worth it due to my cpu ( Intel Core i5 2500K overclocked to 4.60GHz) and the fact that I only intend to game at 1080p.

So say I go for the 970, would I see a huge jump over my old 680 ?

There is also about 60 versions of each card ??
This is the card that's in my Overclockers basket right now...

Asus GeForce GTX 970 DirectCU II OC Strix 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Any help would be amazing.

Thanks

What PSU and case do you have?

There are some quite long 970s like the G1 and windforce, so to check if they fit
970 should be grand for 1080p, the KFA2 Infin8, MSI, Gigabyte, OcUK reference are all great for their prices

My case is a CM 690 II Dominator Advanced, its bloody massive. Also I think my psu is 650w, As for motherboard I updated it last month. My old 680 is a massive card as well.

Find out the make+model of PSU.

Is it a good 650W PSU or a £10 cheapie.

Maximum Compatibility VGA Card length :304.0mm

So the Gigabyte cards wont fit.

These will,

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming Edition 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £286.99
1 x Asus GeForce GTX 970 DirectCU II OC Strix 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £279.95
1 x Asus Radeon R9 290X ROG Matrix 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (MATRIX-R9290X-4GD5) £229.99
Total : £796.93 (includes shipping : Ex.VAT).

The specs say what it can fit.

And it looks like you need your drive cage.

A duster wouldnt go amiss either.

The thing that has your HDDs in it, I think if you look deeply in the manual you maybe able to remove it if you go hunting for screws.

1. No 980 is not worth the jump in price over 970 at 1080p imo. A cheaper used 980 is a different story though.

2. 2500k @ 4.6Ghz would be more than fine for a single 980

3. 970 is an ideal upgrade if buying new right now especially with the two free games on offer

PSU would have never likely been a problem as the 680 uses no less power than a 970 even though the 970 is considerably faster, but thats a moot point.

I know there's loads of 970s so it can be a bit confusing what's the best one to go for. If the Kfa2 infinity black was still around £280 I would say go for that one but it's gone up in price by a lot. The MSI 970 looks like it would suit you the best imo. General rule is to avoid the cheapest plastic blower 970s that were use on reference 680s.
