Ok, new build is imminent and I reckon I should also bite the bullet and do away with my 19" CRT in favour of a new 22" LCD screen.

Currently looking at:
Samsung SM-226BW
Viewsonic VX2255wmb
Iiyama Prolite E2201W

I've never had an LCD before so...

What is backlight bleed and is it really a big deal?
Are there any programmes that help calibrate the colours? as I've read many screens need this. Does it depend on the monitor?
How do you check for dead pixels?
I've read about panel lotteries on some makes, again, is this something to be concerned about? opinion appears mixed.
Finally, will I wish I'd done this years ago? ;)

see here. Generally not a massive issue, uniformity of backlight can vary from one model to another. If it's too bad, it's normally easy to return and RMA.

plenty! :) see here. Colour accuracy and settings do vary out of the box, but always good to calibrate at least with software tools. if possible, a colorimeter ensures even better settings.

you can use Dead pixel buddy which cycles through various backgrounds to allow you to spot dead/lazy pixels

MANY manufacturers have to source different panels from different manufacturers, it's just the way the market is. More often than not it is totally seemless to the user, and all the panels used are very comparable. they all meet the manuf required standards anyway. I wouldn't get too bogged down in the whole thing tbh, there's far too much talk about it, and people jumping to conclusions (often mis-informed) about which is best etc.
