Bear in mind as well that a lot of autoboxes (even as early as the late 80's) are intelligent and adapt to your driving style.
I let the battery go flat on an old XJ6 I had and after jump starting, I drove it fairly hard for the next 50 miles or so in the Cotswolds. From then on, the car kicked down early and held the gears longer regardless of how I drove! It really felt like a different car to drive.
There's a lot of personal preferences when it comes to autoboxes too - I'm sure people rave about the one in my 7 series but I haven't quite gelled with it.
