From Manual To Auto - What are they like to live with?

Bear in mind as well that a lot of autoboxes (even as early as the late 80's) are intelligent and adapt to your driving style.

I let the battery go flat on an old XJ6 I had and after jump starting, I drove it fairly hard for the next 50 miles or so in the Cotswolds. From then on, the car kicked down early and held the gears longer regardless of how I drove! It really felt like a different car to drive.

There's a lot of personal preferences when it comes to autoboxes too - I'm sure people rave about the one in my 7 series but I haven't quite gelled with it.

I get on surprisingly well with the auto box on the Legacy and it does remove the frustration of town driving. For some more spirited driving the tiptronic can be used but I find the box does well at kicking up and down when I need it so I tend to avoid this.
