From onboard to sound card?

Right now I'm using onboard sound (Gigabyte DS4) with a 2.1 I-Trigue 3500 setup. I may decide to go 5.1 in a few months when I get a new pad, but for now this is my setup. (I also have a decent pair of headphones)

My PC, like a lot of us is my Audio Player, DVD player and games machine. What am I honestly going to notice if I switch to a device such as this? Is my music playback going to change at all? I have only ever used onboard sound, and I've been pretty content with onboard for a long time. Maybe I don't know what I'm missing.

Oh and how much juice do these things need? I only have a Tagan 430w and my CPU is OC'd.

Cheers guys.

I'm using the onboard sound in my system fed out to an AV amp and a 5.1 system. In all my previous systems I've always used Soundblaster card but this time I've decided to go with the Sigmatel onboard sound and I'm quite happy with it. I have an Audigy 2zs sitting in its box in my toy cupboard but over the years I've grown a little disenchanted with Creative's driver issues and with other Creative induced hiccups in my system.

I'm very happy with the quality of sound from my system now so my answer to you would be not to bother with the Soundblaster. Others will have different experiences and and offer different advice.

You will notice an improvement in sound quality using as you say a good set of cans.

Onboard sound isn't quite there yet compared to some of the creative cards. Though for similar ££ you're better off choosing something like an Auzentech card.

I've been out of hardware for a long time, but my motherboard has a SB LIVE 24-bit built in. Is newer onboard sound better than this yet?
