Finally given up with AMD and going to try Intel.
What I want to do is move over from Phenom on a Gigabyte MB to an i5 on an MSI MB.
Ideally just lifting one set out of the case and fitting the other in its place, retaining the drives, psu etc. I assume there is a way to do this and if so would welcome any advice and guidance.

as your entire underlying chipset will change I wouldnt even consider it. Im not saying it wont work but you will spend an awful amount of time in safe mode and even then there is no guarantee it will work.

if you have a few hours spare and like BSOD's then give it a go!

I went 990fx to z97 using the same windows install. Booted up straightaway then deleted old driver and got new ones.

Some peep here got noting but issue going from Z87 to Z97, so it can happen, he fixed them by a clean install after trying all else.

I have done to also from Intel to Intel but do not advise it.

The previous owner of this board replaced it in a system that was running the same AMD CPU I am using. Straight swap and loaded the MB drivers online after booting.
That is what got me wondering. I am used to XP and previous OSs that had no chamce of doing this, but seems 7 is much more swap friendly.
Since posting this question here I have seen lots of instances in other forums where a different MB and CPU have replaced the existing and all with no real issues.
Then again lots say "Just don`t, you can`t do that!"
I wonder if the naysayers have any direct experience of this procedure, or is it just a throwback reaction because it could never be done before?
Not wanting to offend people who have posted that its a no-no, just keen to get to the bottom of an issue that has two definite camps of thought.

I've done this a few times and it has worked most times. I recall that it didn't work once or twice, I couldn't get past "Windows loading", but I can't remember what hardware configurations I was switching between.

I personally, would just try and see. It will be far less hassle if it works, but don't be too surprised if you encounter some issues.

The best course of action would be to do a fresh install, just because. But... You don't have to.
