My Right hand is currently almost unusable!

I have had developing osteoarthritis for some years but it has, until now, been well controlled (Glucosomine sulphate (available on prescription but you DO have to ask for it!) does help considerably.

However, I managed to totally **** myself up 48 hours ago. (Changing the indicator bulbs on a Nissan Micra! Serious bloody awkward job, even if one wasn't arthritic, I wish I could sue the *******s! )

I cannot use my right thumb, It is bloody agony even to move the arm!

If this doent get better over the weekend I am possibly seriously looking at a life changing situation!

I am a Manual worker, A Manual worker who cannot use his hands is about as much use in the world as a chocolate teapot!

:( :(

All you young ones!

You have all this to look forward too! /: :(

:( :(

Do not really think the docs would be able to do anything really (Apart from strong pain killers, which, actually, I would not be happy with in the long term (Pain killers do not fix anything, at worst they enable you to damage yourself further without realising it))

My joints are ****ed, there is nothing the docs could do really! /:

Either I recover in the short term or I do not! In the longer term my working days are clearly numbered. I had hoped to have another 5 years or so at least but the way things are going this might not work out. I will still be too young even then to retire properly so I am going to have to make alternative plans.

Ho Hummn!

In the future I will just have to be increasingly careful to avoid doing stuff that is going to aggravate matters and hope I can keep going.

BTW, The pain is like having somebody twisting your finger all the time! :(

Noted. Will continue to exercise readily to stave this kind of stuff off.

That's how I got my rotator cuff (shoulder) injury and an incapacitating back injury (bad squat form) that I am recovering from. Putting on my socks in the morning is near impossible :D

Noted. Will not overexert myself and will strive for perfect form before lifting heavy weights.

Me being a south paw and slightly ambidextrous, age don't both me. ;)

By the way OP how old are you? Am 44 and feel like 18 still, I think its a man thing. :p

What about anti-inflammatory medication? I guess it depends on the nature of the arthritis, but have you asked the doc what the options are?

Let's hope you make a swift recovery from this latest bout. When you do, you'll need to set yourself some boundaries and not over-do it. From my limited knowledge, battling arthritis is a balance between doing too little (not good) and doing too much (definitely not good).

Time to think of some alternative ways to earn a living perhaps that puts less stress on your body?

My arthritis is from competing in marathons.
I came off stage tonight and one fan commented that I'm not head banging as much as I used to, they really don't know the agony I'm in.
I had to get one punter to reach down and get my Newcastle Brown because I couldn't it :(

Well there's definitely a difference between exercise and pushing your body to the limits where it breaks down. I'd class marathons as the latter, versus an hour pumping iron/riding a bike.

Interestingly enough, a large study concluded simply running doesn't cause arthritis or deterioration in the joints, despite what some people may assume since running is quite 'shocking' to the ankles/knees. Of course, marathons are again an extreme example.

I remember when I was first an apprentice, for a good year or so my hands would hurt to the point where I wanted to give up. After 10 years of it, with my hands becoming much stronger, I still had aches and knew that one day I'd probably have problems with arthritis or similar. Now I have a desk job and instead of achy hands I have a fat arse.

I've had that for over a decade now. If you have any questions just let me know.

Ah cheers Edrof. I've been struggling for well over two years but recently it's progressed. Been put on sulfasalazine, methotrexate, vitamin d and folic acid. Oh and a lovely steroid jab in the bum..
