Played Wow for a long time (Not recently). Enjoyed it for what it appeared to be, as in quests, dungeons and grouping with friends and what not. Truly awesome game and I'm looking forward to the next expansion. I have no idea about the lore or history of Warcraft other than what was offered in WOW, but tonight I've suddenly become very interested.

Just dusting off my game shelf that's not been opened for a while and I notice Warcraft III. Jeez I can't even remember buying the game, so I'm assuming it was the last chicken in one of those 3 for £15 deals in Game.

Installed it and oh my god. It's brilliant. The graphics are very good for it's age and the presentation is the usual Blizzard perfect. So colourful, bright and the gameplay oozes polish. I've never been a keen a strategy player, but this has had me gripped for a few hours this evening.

Playing this after WOW makes the game really interesting as the same locations and characters are popping up. Seems kinda sad I know, but there I was. A level 2 Orc named Thrall (Horde players will recognise this name) and I'm running around Arathi. It really is like a nostalgic trip.

Okay then. There is one problem and I'm not sure if it's a big problem, or nothing to worry about. The game movie cinematics are not working on my Vista64 PC. I've searched everywhere for a fix but no luck. Unless I delete the Movies folder from the installation directory I can't launch the game. Screen rez changes and and sticks. Only able to End task to get back to Windows.

Assuming there is no fix, I'm now debating weather to install XP on a spare partition or just carry on without the cinematics

Edit... Problem sorted now - Vista Codec Pack fixed this.

I played them both in that order too and know exactly what you mean :) No idea how I managed to miss WC3 the first time round :o
Really enjoyable game.

No idea on fixing your problem I'm afraid.

Tried Right clicking the short cut and using Compatibility mode?

Vista should then emulate whichever OS you choose from the list, such as 98, ME, XP etc :)

I don't know if it actually fixes problems though, as i've never had any!

warcraft 3 and it's expansion (frozen throne) ooze quality.Story line is phenomenal and I love how they combined action RPG with strategy.

By the way I highly recommend you check out a custom map called DotA.

It's pretty much the only game I've played for 3 years now and it's still going strong. It's spawned entire leagues, clans, amateur and professional tournaments. It's constantly updated with new versions that include items, heroes, spells, and skills.

It's warcraft without the armies. Just custom heroes, custom skills, graphics, weapons, items everything. They've put a ton of work into it and it's highly highly polished. 5 players on each team, 2 teams. Aim is to crush the Throne of the other team. Very simple, Very enjoyable, and every single game is different because of the near infinite item/hero combos

Good old dota, the only game where trying to learn gets you banned from a game ;)

'You're learning?!? BAN!!!!!!!!'

I tried to play warcraft 3 but couldnt get into it. The cut sceens are really good so i hope you get them going.
I found Battle Realms more fun, although it didnt get great reviews.

The paladin that turned evil really annoyed me, i think you fight this guy at some point in wow, or at least the thing he became.

Its a good game to play if you want fluff. Never really understood the warcraft story, wow didnt really tell it very well.

30 mins searching for a fix this morning and I've got it sorted. The cut scenes are excellent. One particular google search suggested a codec pack. I'm not keen on Codec packs, but I installed Vista Codec Package and it worked. hopefully I've not buggered anything else up.

Pretty summed it up right there. Epic story telling and cinematics, fantastic gameplay and graphics to boot.

Played it through twice back to back and just looking a for a digital download version to play again.

I do have one more question.

Like WOW if I purchase the expansion does it add to the original game. New units and such, or is it an expansion that sits after the original. In other words shall I buy it now or wait till I finish Reign of Chaos.

I'll have to have another crack at Dota, apparently it's one of those things you need someone to explain things to you as you go along.

Perhaps we can arrange a newbie evening for this if we get enough interest and some kind person can give an introduction to the game?

I sunk a lot of hours into WC3, its a great game.

Multiplayer is kinda rough these days though, Id tried playing on battlenet earlier this year and my level 1 azz keeping getting matched up against level 18 people who were really good and getting caned every game was not fun.

I'll run some people through DotA if theres interest. Wont say I'm completely amazing at it but played for awhile now and I have got a decent understanding at the game. Would be nice to have some people to play decent matches against... theres some complete muppets about.

lol, to be fair he does have a point. If there is a storyline in WoW I didn't even realise, because it's just so poorly told and fragmented.

It's there quite easily... But it is a lot easier to grasp if you have played Warcraft 3 and the like. (which I haven't) as we go through wow my friends are always commenting that things are making sense as we play through various dungeons and bosses.

Indeed, in several places there are even books and stuff (for example the Scarlet Monastry) where you can read about various parts of the story. WOW is more of an addon to the story, you will enjoy it far more if you know some of th background (which I know very little, so actually going to play through WC3 and Frozn Throne myself).

I was a huge WC3 fan back in it's day. I remember sitting there for 2 days solid and just working through it.
