I've been researching building a front end HTPC system which will be in the living room connected to the tv. It needs to be silent/very quiet and have a small footrpint
The backend server will provide the htpc with media and will be used to back up two laptops in the house. I'd like this setup to be on the quiet side too, and energy efficient as it will be on quite a lot of the time.

For the HTPC.
Intel atom setup.
Should i get a separate graphics card?
Hardrive - start off with something small, and will upgrade this to SSD in the future.
Memory 4gb (any advantage over 2gb)
Case. Thinking Lian Li Q07B, Fractal Mini ITX, Origen AE M10

For the server.
Havent ever built a server, but from my research it appears that a low spec machine will do the job perfectly. Would be nice to have passive cooling, but not really sure if this is doable.

Open to suggestions on any of the components, as i have been out of building PC's for quite awhile (am writing this email on a 7y laptop!)

Thanks!

Just to add, will be building the server first so it would be nice to have the capability to connect it to the tv to watch 1080p.

Would an atom/amd setup suit the server? Should i be looking at processer speed?
I dont mind buying a graphics card for the server now, and then when i build the htpc to use the card.
