Hi
I've been having random lock ups/freezes in games requiring me to manually restart the pc and I'm not sure what to attribute it to. I most likely think its heat related but the temps i've been monitoring don't seem nearly high enough to cause an issue.
My setup is:
AMD Phenom x4 965BE (stock cooler, stock speed)
Gigabyte MA790XT UD4P (latest bios)
4 GB DDR3 G skill NQ @ 1333 mhz
Gigabyte GTX 460 Super OC (260.99)
XFX 650W PSU (about 3 months old)
W7 Pro x64
Case is a none make but does have what I think to be good cooling. I fitted 2 120 mm fans for intake and exhaust plus it has a huge 140mm fan on the side panel.
I've tested the memory, no problems reported there. Tested the CPU with p95 and all seemed fine(It does idle at quite high temps but I believe thats par for the course with these chips). Highest temps I got was 68C. Ran Furmark at high settings with 1920 x 1080 res and and I don't think the GPU went past 60 c. No crashes or errors in any of those tests.
Game tested:
Crysis with high settings 1920 x 1080 4xaa. CPU didn't go past 60c, GPU ran between 54 - 58 C. Crashed after 45 - 60 mins. Dropped the settings gradually. Even went to windowed mode. Temps got slightly better with each tweak but still crashed. One of the crashes reported back a blue screen which I never saw but event viewer reported it. It said the fault was with the nvidia driver(vga.sys)
CoDBO MP with highest settings and res record similar temps to the above and crashed after about the same amount of time. Managed to get it stable at a lower res 1600 x 1050 but what baffles me is that the SP, and I know it's only SP ran at full everything no problem for 20 hours of play. Not constant but at 3-4 hour sessions.
BFBC2 didn't return any problems however.
I just can't undertstand it. I don't think I'm getting high temps at all but due the circumstances of the crashes I can't think it would be anything else.
However, and this is gonna sound a bit strange. I have a suspicion that my motherboard doesn't work well with nvidia cards. I had a GTS 250 before my current card and I had no end of problems with that. For starters I couldn't get the 260.99 drivers to work with it.When I finally did install them I would get lock ups at desktop. I have since tested that card in my other PC and got the drivers working with it perfectly, stress tested it and had no issues.
I think there was a chap on here the other week with a similar problem between nvidia cards and the 790x chipset. In fact having googled it seems quite widespread.
Sorry for waffling on. Just so frustrated by this. Any help or feedback is greatly appreciated. Cheers
