Frustration with not getting pristine GPU's first time

I recently bought a Gigabyte 1080 FE card. The outer packaging arrived perfect but the GPU box was battered at one side and the damage went right through to the foam. The GPU was fine but that was beside the point. When I come to sell on Ebay in a years time I am selling with a battered box and potential buyers will wonder If I launched it against a wall.

I then bought the Gigabyte 1080 G1 Gaming card. Everything was perfect but the GPU backplate had scratches down the aluminium and you could clearly see the silver through the black paint. The card worked fine but it niggled at me to the point where I have now returned that. At the end of the day I paid top dollar for a G1 card and I don't want cosmetic damage even if it is just paint. This is no fault of Overclockers, this happens with all things mass manufactured I guess.

Are you guys the same or do you just think, 'stuff it' and close it up in your case and forget about it?

Noticed both items were Gigabyte, just an observation lol.

Packaging I wouldn't be too fussed about. Physical damage to the card, yeah that would bother me. Usually rip the coolers off anyway, though. So would get over that quickly enough.

If the outer pack was fine on the first but the box was screwed that surely is mishandling at the warehouse prior despatch.

Presuming the G1 was sealed still the backplate being scratched is down to Gigabyte. Did it have any protective film on it?

I would want replacement/refund for both even if they were £100 products never mind god knows how much you paid for them (I don't even bother looking at current lol pricing).

Hmm, that's bad luck. I've never had a damaged card that was new. A couple of eBay purchases that had some undisclosed scratches or marks, but then you go in expecting that with used stuff. The worst condition card I've had (and still have) was a warranty replacement GTX 570 from MSI. Looks like it was dragged for a few miles attached to the back of a car. Having said that, it was sent as a replacement for a GTX 460, so I didn't really mind then either, as the upgrade more than made up for its visual flaws.

definitely not. These cards are very expensive. I for one want to sell mine before TI and the box was pristine as it should be for over £600. There's no negotiation here, pay top dollar, expect top product in pristine shape.

This is one of my hates aswell. It drives me nuts when I buy something brand new and the packaging or component don't look it. Plays tricks on me and I keep thinking I should have just bought second hand and saved a few bob.

All you need to do is post a picture of it in the customer service forum and they'll most likely sort you out with a RMA. My point would be that there is no knowing what sort of damage has been done to the card if it's received a knock hard enough to damage the packaging like that.

Yeah I think the first card was caused in despatch. The scratched card was fully sealed so obviously caused at Gigabyte.

I have had a couple of boxes that were slightly damaged but never really bothered me but if the card was scratched, I wouldn't be happy and would request a replacement.

I have had all sorts from brand new damaged boxes ,scratches ,bent heat sink fins and one with one hs centre gpu screw missing...

the products must come pristine sealed untouched for brand new even if it was for £10 never mind over £600

It would not suprise me they will be worse QC with the 10 series as they will be trying to throw em out the door to fulfil orders

They shouldn't be there if they're not stated on the ad though. If you knew something had a scratch or minor damage you wouldn't pay as much so everything should be disclosed & if it's not then the advert is misleading.
