I was reading a great tutorial on this forum about how to do an ILS approach in FSX and i followed it on FS2004 as i don't have FSX.

The problem is that the ATC never lines me up with the runway, even though he says "Fly straight in". Now i know i need the heading of the runway and i got that, but i just don't know when to start turning to that heading to line up with the runway.

What am i doing wrong here?

Have you tried opening an IFR flight plan ahead of the flight? You can even do this in flight.

I haven't got FS in front of me so can't remember if by doing this, you will be vectored to intercept the ILS.

If you have a flight plan, and it doesn't result in adequate vectoring, you're going to have to figure it out yourself. Or if you are more advanced, get hold of an Instrument Approach Plate (they are available on line) and do what real pilots do. Fly the standard approach procedure, and intercept the ILS that way.

If you don't fancy that complication (though it is well worth the effort), you'll need to do some rudimentary planning ahead of reaching the airfield.

Some tips:

Plan a route where you intercept the ILS:
- 10 miles from the airport
- c 2000' AGL
- 60 degree off the runway heading. For example if the ILS runway heading is 180 (or runway 18), and you are coming from the west, try to fly in at something like a heading of 060. This will give you plenty of time to readjust as the ILS needle moves to the centre.

Feel free to ask further questions.

Good tips but I think you mean heading 120
