Hi,

I am building a new PC for general use but i want the spec based on Microsoft FSX as i will be using that a lot!!

My budget for the CPU, Motherboard and RAM is £350 (could stretch to £550 and buy windows 7 next month as i have windows 7 RC till june)

It will be paired with Windows 7 64bit, ATi Radeon 5770 Graphics Card and a decent case.

Would i get better performance using 8gb ddr2 than 4gb ddr3?

Obviously quad core is best as FSX utilises 4 cores so which is best? Phenom II, i7,i5,i3?

Any help appreciated!

Matt

I'm the same, looking for a system fit for FSX, although I need a full system. At the moment I'm looking at two specs I've put together. One is an i5 750 based system and the other is a Phenom II x4 965. To be honest FSX, as far as I've heard, runs better on Intel based platforms and the price difference is fairly minimal. Actually an i5 750 OEM is about £5 cheaper than a 965 retail. So, that what I'm probably going to go for. As for RAM, I'm currently using 3Gb DDR2 800mhz so anything to me is an improvement. Based on that I'm going to go with 4Gb DDR3 1600Mhz. Hope that kinda helps

Go for an i3 overclocked bundle from us at OcUK as its very good value for money, its below your £350 budget and at 4Ghz, is very quick. While an i5 / i7 would be better long term but its a bit beyond your budget.

But FSX also need a good graphics card, even more so if you some one who likes adding in the real scenary packs i know you can buy.

I'd buy the i3 overclocked bundle with windows 7 Home Premium 64bit and a 5770 graphics card. It all comes to £515 ;)

As I said earlier, I'm in the same boat but I was wondering if its really worth my while upgrading my existing 512mb 9800gt to a HD5850 just yet. I'm thinking I may hold off until the new nvidia cards come out. What do you think?

A bit like waiting for 120 mph petrol free commuter cars!!!

AMD/ATI have the jump on Nvidia at the mo and I honestly don't see them catching up for a while longer yet. Any card they (Nvidia) do bring out will be top end 5000 series price or more. With all the dithering AMD/ATI have produced a whole line up of scaleable cards that are heavily reviewed on the net and are proven.

IMO go for the HD5850 or more affordable HD5770

On your budget i would go for a Phenom II quad CPU with a AMD3 MB and 4Gb of DDR3

The reason is purely budget. I7 is out of reach, i5 and the 1156 socket is ok but a deadend board. Intel do not seem to have long term plans for this socket and the next gen of x6 core etc CPU's seem to be 1366 socket based.

Any help appreciated!

Matt

On your budget I woud go Phenom II Quad CPU, AMD3 MB and 4 x Gb DDR3

because

i7 out of reach.

i5 is ok but the 1156 socket is a stopgap board with no real future unlike the AMD3 board.

Hi,
Seems a good price but its only a dual core!

Ive heard FSX is a game that does take into account quad cores so i think i would be daft not to go for one?

Do you think an i5 overclocked would be better than a phenom II overclocked?

Matt

Would this be a good spec for FSX?

I would consider going Mid to Full Tower on the case. You have a lot of heat generating components listed and stuffed into a Micro case you may experience heat related problems

Hi,

Ive been using recently a computer with an intel dual core 3ghz cpu and a built in geforce 9400 graphics card.

The above spec with the i7 and that 5770 graphics card will give me a hell of a lot better performance and fps wont it??

Im getting about 18-20fps in a straight line and about 9-10fps turning with that spec. And thats on medium to high graphics.

What fps would i get in a straight flight and turning with the i7 spec approx?

It all looks ok to me, how ever go with an overclocked bundle as it will serve you better and its not a lot more.

In terms of windows 7 ultimate, why go ultimate? I doubt it offers you anything more than home premium. Do you need multi-language? Domain connection services, RDP in? If not save your self the money and put it to that overclocked bundle i talked about.

Hi, yeah I could do. Could I not overclock the stuff myself anyway? And that way I could choose the parts I want? Would I get a massive boost on graphics performance I. FSX going the i7 route from what I
using at the moment(intel c2d 3ghz and 9400m graphics)?

.............was thinking

graphics wise... a big boost (especially with the 24" screen)

general computing wise ... a big boost as well. You can have multipule widows and applications going all day long and the puter will not fall over.

overclock yourself... course you can. OcUK just offer bundles pre OC'd that are a rock solid base that's all.

Seems that you are/or already were set on a i7 build so go with it.
