Hey guys, i guess this is the correct place to post this as it's about gaming and not a specific part of the PC.

I am heavily into flight sims and really want to boost my experience.

After having a friend hunt me down some components that he thinks will let me run games like FSX and Arma 2 at very high graphics this is what we came up with.

ASUS P5N-D Motherboard
Intel Cor Duo 2 E8400 processor (3.0GHz)
Seagate Hard Drive, Barracuda (250GB)
OCZ 600W StealthXstream PSU
Kingstonf HyperX 4GB (x2 2GB) DDR2 6400C5 8Mhz RAM

I already have a Nvidia 9800 installed but it is being choked by old hardware.

Just want some opinions on this possible system, will it run the forementioned games at high level graphics?

Thanks
Mini.

For FSX in particular i'd try and get a Quad Core. Its a very CPU dependant game if you want to crank the settings way up. Even then, you may struggle.

Not had any experience with Arma2 though.

I have that exact same Motherboard, and tbh if you're looking to maybe OC, it's hopeless.... However it is a very stable and sound board.

My pa runs flight simulators and used to have a Q6600 for FSX, but he could hardly max any of it without it falling to its knees, he now has an i5 and it still can't max. Tbh if you're happy with maybe medium settings, then I'd say that setup is alright.

Yes i am happy with medium settings, i have a budget of £500 for this upgrade and what i listed above is going to cost £391 so i have a little room for increases. Not bothered with OC'ing, just need something that will hold everything together =]
The main focus for this rebuild os for the new IL2 game Battle Of Britain : Storm of War.

Tbh, since you have just over £100 of leeway for upgrades in that budget, I think adding a quad core would be worth it, like maybe a second hand Q6600, if you can find one for under £100 that is. :)

Not an expert on the game but looking at some benchmarks a quad may not be massively faster than a highly clocked dual core:

A Wolfdale such as that suggested by the OP will be pretty nippy (3ghz even before you start clocking) and may actually outrun a Q6600. Extra cores don't help much if you have one extremely demanding thread that's causing the bottleneck, in such cases clockspeed is king.

Obviously as mentioned I'm no expert on FSX so I'd recommend further research before taking my word on it, I did remember reading something about a patch a while back to improve multicore support, although I don't think it was as revolutionary as people had been hoping for.

I'd reiterate what HangTime has said, 2 cores running at a 4GHz will be better than 4 cores running at 3Ghz for FSX. I have the E8400 and an Asus P5Q acheiving a stable 4GHz overclock was easy, I'd reccomend adding a decent cooler to your list if you're planning on overclocking, I went with the Freezer 7 Pro which is a good price / performance compromise.

Thanks a lot guys! Very helpful.

I think this set up will run most new games nicely and thats all i'm after, a GOOD standard of high quality image and high FPS. I am sick of the days of stuggling to fly or shoot somebody, especially in poor graphics =]

I'm running an i5@4Ghz with a 5850 and have pretty good performance on FSX.

There are a number of new'ish tweaks that have been discovered which help a lot. I use a few of them with the FPS locked at 30 and its 99% silky smooth.

I think you could probably get away with a dual core but go for the quad if you can. One of the custom tweaks sets FSX to run on 3 out of 4 cores which seems to give good performance boost. It's just one of those annoying things that doesn't work well out of the box!

Another fix is a shader model update to get FSX to work properly with latest DX9 shader stuff. Makes huge improvement when using ATI cards.

I use a Nvidia card currently.
Ah it's all so confusing, i guess there is no definate answer, all i want is a good PC for all games, lol.
Arma 2, Il2 1946, FSX and when released Battle of Britain - Storm of War

Talking of FSX, i have a GAX48TDQ6 mobo, a Q9300 and 8 gig of DDR3 1333mhz ram on a Vista64 machine with a GTX295 and the FSX frame rate is terrible to say the least. Even if i turn all the settings in FSX very low i struggle to get past 10fps and averages at 7fps.

What would be causing this please??

Vista:D

Seriously, get windows 7 and overclock the life out of your CPU, that will definatley help. Maybe even get a new GPU?
