FTL - Faster Than Light

It is a fantastic game! I made it to the 2nd phase of the fight with the mothership, but it tore me in two when it returned since I barely scraped by at the end of the first encounter :(

I'm kinda surprised this game never got updated. Didn't it get 20x more than it asked for in the Kickstarter? And not even 1 content patch? I dunno, the game got boring after a while once you've seen all of the content at least once.

Aha, me too! ♥
I know that it's worth taking out all the lazors first in the first phase, but then by second phase, if you don't reach the repair station or too damaged it's pretty much a guaranteed death situation. :(
Although, the Glaive Beam weapon is pretty awesome against the mothership! :D

I have taken down the mothership 4 times now - each using different ships/tactics and each time was a gaming air punching moment :) However, for each of these glorious triumphs there are countless frozen, dead ships, drifting through the galaxy for all time - each with a compliment of frozen, dead crew members floating around inside them. Here's to the many who didn't make it o/

One of the best PC games in recent years.

Beaten it twice on normal mode (although it took loads of attempts). Unlike some i have never played it on easy difficulty, i'm not a pansy :P

Just out of curiosity, what ships and layouts have you unlocked so far?

I've found some good strategies to help beat the mothership, but for those who want to try things out themself i've kept them in the spoiler for you:

The main strategy to beat the boss is to plan every single upgrade you buy around beating the final boss. For example, one of my favourite upgrades is the weapon pre-igniter, but in long fights like the boss fight it is not as effective so I don't go for it any more (although I don't complain if i get it for free)

The cloak is amazing, but only get level 1:
If you keep the cloak at level one it will activate for long enough to avoid the ships 'power surge attacks' (like the drone armada at level 2) and it will be ready to go again just as the next attack is ready. Any higher level and you will be hit by the power surge attack before the cloak has recharged

Teleport to disable the ship's weapons:
This strategy isn't as effective on level three, but on the first two levels it is very easy to disable all four weapons of the mothership by teleporting two reasonably good fighters into the weapon rooms. The rooms are completely isolated so if you kill the single occupant they cannot be repaired. Two of any crewmember other than the engi should be able to take down the person manning the weapon, then destroy the weapon.
I usually take down the inner left weapon first (triple missiles), then the inner right (lots of lasers), then the outer right (big beam), then the outer left (ion).

Do not kill all of the crew if you plan to use this strategy. the ship will then be taken over by an AI that can quickly repair weapons, it will also power down the oxygen system so you cannot board the ship again

An added bonus of the teleporter is that by killing the ship's crew off you get better rewards than by destroying normal ships.

Get a defence drone MKII:
This one isnt so critical, but it is very useful. A defence drone MKII, the level one cloak from above and decent shielding (level 3 or 4) can almost keep you from losing any health in the entire battle. I often give the drone system slightly more power than i need for a MKII defence drone (4 bars) just so it doesnt go offline even if the drone system is slightly damaged

another couple of things I will do if I have money left over is to improve the oxygen system and the medical bay to level 2 so I dont have to worry about repairing them so much.

Hope that helps :)

PS. i suspect a mod will move this to the FTL thread soon. it hasnt been posted in for a while, but its floating around somewhere

*edit*
Here's a screenie of my best run against the mothership just before I demolished it. Spoilered again because it has a very difficult to unlock ship in it (although not as difficult as the ****ing slug ship:

Played this game for a couple of nights solid and really enjoyed it but it gets very repetitive very quickly. Definitely could have used some more variation in encounters and the combat.

have you unlocked any of the other ships yet? The strategies you need to use for the different ships (and in some cases the different layouts) are vastly different.

I know what you mean though, the game can get repetitive after a while

I didn't even know there was an easy mode :p
look to the left of the start button :)

From what i've heard it isn't 'easy' and 'normal' mode, but really its 'hard' mode and 'really really really hard' mode

Yeah unlocked the engi, federation, zoltan and I think rock ships, plus a few alternative layouts. My main issue was just that 90% of the encounters were pretty much identical to each other.

Well FTL takes way more luck than it does anything else, so the difficulty is more a setting for how big of a part you want luck to play.

Aye unfortunately. You can try and make the best of a bad situation but if you're dealt a bad hand there is nothing you can do at all.

I'm not so sure. You can reach a point where you're good enough to win 90% of the time on normal. Sure, you get some unwinnable games but they're quite rare honestly. I watched Lethalfrag (popular streamer) and he had something ridiculous like a 95% win ratio. He's even done no pause runs with all of the ships.

I've killed the mothership twice on normal, I found that the trick is to use the pause feature to give you time to set up your crew doing repairs and where your guns are aiming. Doing it all on the fly becomes overwhelming.

You mean something like being in a ship without weapons and without fuel that relies on teleporting to win fights being up against a zoltan ship?

Luckily my shields were enough to prevent him from being able to damage me and he didnt have any missiles, so it was an impasse. Sometimes I wish there was a surrender option or some way you could call a draw and move on

Agreed. Being able to stop and assess the situation is essential.

I've found that drones other than the defence drone aren't really that useful in the final battles when compared to cloaking and (especially) crew teleporter. The latter is, in my opinion, probably one of the most important tools when it comes to the mothership, next to a fairly powerful weapon that can penetrate shields. After that, it's mostly about timing and rate of fire.

I liked the game at first but the random nature of it means sometimes you just have no chance because you don't get what you really need
