FTL - Faster Than Light

might be the point but it;s stupid because the random nature of it all means you really have little outcome in changing what is going to happen if you get only crap stuff or barely any weapons

It's not stupid - it's unfair at times, yes, but the entire idea of Roguelikes is that the game is unfair to you sometimes. Saying that they're stupid for doing that is like saying FPS games are stupid because you have to shoot people in them. It's missing the point of the genre.

You can level your crew quickly in the early stages if your ship has shields.

If you encounter a low level ship with only one laser, you can regen your shield and never take any damage but your shield guy will get exp every time it regens. It will take about 10 minutes of getting shot at, so go get a brew.

Your pilot and engine guy will also get exp every time you dodge a laser shot.

So you should leave stage one with 3 crew on two stars, which helps a lot in the later stages.

Also, if you have a weak enough weapon then you can level the weapons guy up too. something like an ion weapon, or a low level laser/beam weapon against a ship with shields

*edit*
just got win #3 on my 'unlock the slug ship' run. somehow i managed to get ~4500 points compared to my usual ~3800 with that ship. sadly four of the crew died because i wasnt quick enough on the teleporter button on the last stage of the boss.

Bought this in a previous Steam sale but I've only just got around to playing it, and it feels like I'm going round in circles. The hardest thing at the moment is fighting fires and intruders, especially with only a small crew. Are there any good hints and tips for a new player?

Lock the doors and then open an airlock or two.

^ +1
Upgraded doors that lock rather than the standard starting version.
Minimum of 5 crew as soon as possible.
Events are usually worth the risk.
Enemy life support and shields are good targets as they focus in repairing them quickly which means a fire bomb can wreck havoc in these areas when occupied.
Upgrade shields fully and have a teleporter before final stage.

Going to have to play this again now.....

got a few more minor things to add to what bickaxe has said.
- make your very first upgrade the doors up one level
- having level 2 shields can make you practically invincible on the first sector
- level 2 defence drone is very handy in the later sectors.
- explore as much of the sector as you can before the rebel fleet arrive for extra scrap. going in to bits of nebula will slow the fleet down if you are not in a nebula sector
- teleporting onto an enemy ship and killing the crew gives you more scrap. however, i suggest only doing this with races that are good at fighting or have extra health

I would argue that the level 2 defence drone costs too much for what it does. You can achieve the same kind of missile avoidance via cloaking which is also incredibly useful in the last sector and just generally in all fights. It also doesn't cost drones to activate.

like I said, its handy in the later sections, but not essential. It certainly helps me avoid a hell of a lot of damage since it can stop missiles, pulse lasers and boarding drones

Yeah. I wasn't trying to completely shoot you down (*insert some joke about defence done here*) :p I agree that it's nice to have but I personally find I tend to run out of power (as in, have all the upgrades but want to spend my power elsewhere). Perhaps it's just a playstyle thing but I tend to focus on weapons, dodging, cloak, shield, etc and i've found any of the drones that use more than two power to be too annoying to fit in with that.

Upgrading shields and engines is good. two bar shields mean you can abuse some of the early ships. Medbay and teleporter iirc open up new story options.

I do like the paper rock scissors wrt tactics in this game.

For my 5 year old I used the cheat which removes the rebel fleet from cathing you up. by the time you get to the mother ship you are fully maxed out. It helps him no end although I still need to take control from time to time; he refuses to try and read the dialogue so i get a chance to make the decisions that'll help unlock other ships.

Ah, that explains why i like the drone so much and you dont. Engines are usually the last major thing I upgrade. I take the 'sit there and (let my shields) take it like a man' approach and use the spare money from not upgrading the engines very much on the other parts of the ship. It seems to work better that way for me but everyone is different. Also, I'm quite happy to pause a lot and power down stuff like the medbay and oxygen supply to get me a bit of extra evasion just before the opponents weapons are about to hit, then power them up after the opponents volley
