FTO Questions...

Lacklustre performance? Come on, the manual GPX does 0-60 in 6.3 seconds. It's not as fast as an RX7 but then not much on the road is!

It's a pretty looking 2 litre normally aspirated Coupe. How much faster does it need to be?

I kind of agree with Drexel, thats why we modify our cars for more power, because its not fast enough. How fast does it need to be, for some, it never is fast enough (that doesnt include me btw). :)

TBH the insurance on the GX compared to the GPX was only about £30 different for me and although the performance gain isn't that much with the GPX the noise the engine makes when the MIVEC kicks in is definatley worth it :D

And i know it's been said already but www.ftooc.org is your friend :)

Well, we're off to see it again in a short while - gonna get down there for when they open.

I've got a list as long as my arm full of various things to look out for, and I've written down all the simple things I always forget to do - like checking every little switch on the dash, things like that.

I think it's good that this is the GX spec, as opposed to the faster GPX - for insurance reasons etc., one less thing to go wrong... Plus the fact that this is only one of 2 manuals within 100 miles of us (regardless of spec), and the car is so much tidier than any of the other GPXs (or GR/GXs) we've seen.

I was looking at getting an FTO a few months back, was only looking at the Manual GPX though, main reason for that being that every single insurance company I spoke to either said no matter which model you got it was the same price or there was only £20-£30 difference in the quotes for them.
Test drove a few but never really found the one I wanted ie the facelift one pictured above and couldn't be bothered going down the route of buying one then modifying it myself, then I drove an rx7 and my plans changed :)

A few little mods here and there and you can probably push about 285BHP out of a GPX.

What few little mods would they be then?
Curious being it's a N/A engine.

And regarding DreXel's performance comment, there is more to performance than 0-60 times on paper. They represent the ideal maximum from the car under perfect conditions.
Straight line performance for me is far more about putting your foot down at any speed in any gear and feeling genuine powerful acceleration and thats where some 'fast' cars can be lacking.

Ok, so lacklustre may have been a bit harsh, but compared to other cars you can buy and insure for the same kind of money, they really aren't that quick. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike the FTO, but like I said, for me the performance doesn't justify the insurance costs :)

As for this:

Nothing short of a turbo or supercharger is going to get you 285bhp out of an FTO......

I think it's a perfect car for your missus to be fair. It isn't going to set the world alight and is unlikely to kill her. The insurance is fine and unless she is a complete and utter car nut (as women go...) then the perfomance will be great for her. It ticks the box on "looks" - being the single most important girlie box to tick. It's also nice for you to pootle about in if you feel like it.

Good choice and let's face it, at 180 brake, it's faster than the VAST majority of cars on the road.

Yummy

285bhp may have been a little exaggerated ;)

You would see a noticeable improvement in torque and bhp from the likes of:

Enlarged throttle body
A session on the rollers to sort out fuel and ignition timing
A shot of nitrous :p
Custom downpipes
De-cat pipe
The usual induction kit etc.

Thats a really bad way of increasing power :D Nitrous is a last resort, if you have taken your car to a limit where you cant get more power without spending uber cash then you stick in a shot of nitrous.

Enlarged throttle body - did you make this one up?

Speedometer only goes up to 110?

I think a lot of Jap cars tend to be limited to about 112mph for whatever reason.

I seem to remember Cryfreeman's Evo III (i think it was a III, the yellow one) was limited to 112mph.

No... A bored throttle body does make a difference.

You can get dials which go further than 110MPH but the speedo needs re-configured. The car is easily de-limited with a chip or with something like an Apexi RSM ;)

Well, we went, took it for another half hour test drive. Did most of that myself today, did all the usual testdrive things, including a brief spin up to nearly 8krpm ! It's a pretty nippy car once it gets up into the rev range, despite being non-mivec - I was pleasantly surprised. Then spent about an hour and a half going over the car, checking it all out. It seems very very clean, and well looked after - with a wodge of reciepts in the FSH.

I could only find 2 down points on the whole car - there's a tiny oil drip from an union on the small pipe leading to or from the oil cooler at the front, and the brake pads are shot - a griding noise under braking. I don't think the pads are scored though, but they're not pristine anymore. The rubber bushes on the droplinks aren't in top condition, but none are shot, and nothing's moving about unduly.

My GF decided to go for it - she has it in writing that the oil drip and the brakes will be sorted in it's service and MOT before she picks it up. There's a very good warranty that comes included in the total price, with lots of things like headgasket failures, new clutches, braking system etc covered that I thought wouldn't be.

I think she's going down on Friday to pick it up, I have pics now, but forgot all my FTP passwords to get them up online, will do that later when i find where I wrote them!

/me is very jealous of the gf! :(

Unfortunately - it's not mine it's most definately for my gf... although hopefully I'll be put on the policy as a named driver!
