Is it necessary to use a client to upload html files to your webspace? All I want to do is get a holding page for my website up on my ntl webspace.

Yes, you need a client of some description but not necessarily a specific FTP application. Your operating system's file manager (e.g. Windows Explorer, Nautilus) should allow you to connect to an FTP host and upload/download.

Enter ftp://[email protected] into the address bar, and then enter your password when the prompt appears. Then you can drag and drop.

There are other methods of transferring files, like over ssh e.g. SCP or rsync.
