Hi all.

Fttc is finally available to my property
Just done some checks on bt, sky, plusnet etc

Great news fibre is available
Your estimated speed is 2-6 Mb, with a guaranteed speed of 1 mb

Seriously I get 6 mb now on Adsl+

What is that all about

I have rung sky my current provider and he said he has said he has nEver seen anything like it. My adsl estimated speed is higher than my fibre estimated speed

Can anyone shed any light on this for me

Dan

Sounds like you're on a long line from the FTTC cabinet unfortunately :(

How far do you think the line is?

Yes I think I am over 1000m from the cabinet

If you are currently getting 6 Mb on ADSL+ then I guess that your cabinet must be relatively close to the exchange, or at least connected to it by a 'decent' cable.

I am fortunate is being fed virtually straight out of a cabinet, but that is then about 5Km from the exchange, the two being linked by an old copper cable which I guess was laid when they still had ladies in the exchange putting plugs in holes!

Since they installed an additional fibre cable and cabinet last year and offered a FTTC connection, my download speeds jumped from under 2 Mb to over 50 Mb, so I am quite happy!

I would have thought that the introduction of FTTC would have given you a better benefit than the figures you mention though, and inputting your phone number into the site mentioned above will hopefully show a higher figure.

Are you phone lines underground or overhead.

I'm quite a distance away but because phone lines are underground (and presume good quality) I get double what I should for that distance.

If it's recently been activated, then I'm guessing there's data for speeds.

So you could either get high speeds or low.

Speak to Sky, ask them to upgrade you on the basis of being able to downgrade if the speed is no better?

6Mbps puts you at around 3000M from the exchange. If you're 1000M from the cabinet then around 25Mbps for Fibre. The estimate is either wrong or your line is much longer than you think (3000M is also around 6Mbps for VDSL too).

Hi the line is underground
Postcode is S75 4DE
Just put it in google maps and I am 1.2 mile from the cabinet
So around 1800 metres, that is following the the road

The that prediction is probably realistic (to optimistic), at around 1500m I get an estimate of 3.1-8.8 today, although when I tried it a while ago (estimated 10-14 at the time) I only managed to get 5Mb.

Very unfortunate, any other options? I've got no other cabled choices and hope that I *might* be just in the right area for a local 30/3 wireless service where I am.

That sucks, don't think you would see much improvement getting FTTC as things stand. In your scenario I've heard of Openreach fitting new fibre cabs, so FTTC speeds are practically top. Essentially plugging the gaps due to the slow speeds you're predicted. But looking at the map it doesn't look like your postal/area is serving many properties, a lot of cost for practically no return in Openreach's eye.

If you look on www.roadworks.org (set to 'next 12 months') check for any BT/phone works going on. I've had a look around with your postcode, I can see some stuff planned near the industrial estate and Station Road, but it's still 1 mile+ from you...

Just checked road works.org and BT have road works planned next to my cabinet for 31st January

Here is what is says

Access will be required to underground structures to provide new fibre connection in existing duct....

So I may still see an improvement

Hi All

Sorry to bump an old thread, the works mentioned above saw no improvement is my FTTC estimate speed.
But a few days ago i noticed my ADSL speed jumped from 5.5m/b up to 9m/b. Tested on various downloads (4.57GB on Newsgroups with an average of 1087Kb/s yesterday)
Not seen any road works or anything in the area

Just done a new search for fibre and it still shows fibre at 2-5m/b, and ADSL+ at 3.5 - 7.5m/b
So I am a bit confused

Here is the latest search on BT wholwsale checker

It does now say FTTPoD is available, but i am not splashing out those prices

Anyone any idea why my speed would have jumped?

Dan

i am pretty sure I am around 2 miles away from the cabinet. My fibre speed is max 50mbps which i get 45mbps sync. I am on 80/20 package with plusnet.

I don't understand why you guys are getting such low rate. my line is overhead but I can't see why that would make much differences.

I am sure that most folk realise this, but just because BT (or their contractors) install fibre to a cabinet close to where you live, they won't switch you over automatically unless you specifically ask them to.

They will then almost certainly ask you for a slightly higher monthly payment, but that is definitely open to negotiation, especially if you ask to speak to someone on their Customer Options (or Retentions) team!

If you have the option of 'cable' from Virgin, or someone like that, then that of course is a different story, but a lot of us don't have this option unfortunately.
