Hi,

I have the above camera and was trying some "depth of field" shots...unfortunately I am unabe to get anything decent...

Having researched the matter it appears as if the lens on the s9600 limits these kinds of shots..

I am a newb so I am not entirely sure in that..

could an expert kindly confirm whether this is true? Id be very grateful..

cheers

thanx in advance...

I have a 9500 (same camera) and find it has a reasonable range of field..

To this, the stones in foreground are as sharp as the car right throuh to Scrabo Tower in the backdrop.

And a gradual unsharpening.....

It's the small sensor which means that it's tricky to get a very shallow DoF rather than the lens.

Take a look at this online DoF calculator. If you use the Fuji S9500 entry as the closest one you can see that wide open (f/4.9) and full zoom (66mm) the DoF for a subject at 10ft is about 6" which isn't too bad.

s9600 is f2.8 to f11, but only f2.8 on widest angle.

yeh thats correct...are you saying when taking DOA shots you must set the aperture to the widest angle in my case f2.8? pls clarify..

anyway as these are my very first attempt at DOA please go easy on me:-

thanks in advance...

I have an S5600 and I found because of the "do it all" lens you need to be slightly farther away for a nice DOF. About 5 -6 feet is good, might vary on your combination, give it a go. less than that, and the DOF is shallower, put the camera in A mode and put aperture down to 2.8 and give it a go.

Hope that helps :-)

thanks for that dude...

so there are drawbacks with the fuji s9600 when trying certain things...

cheers

p.s. do u use mf instead of af?

as it's a bridge camera it has drawbacks of course, DSLR owners can change the lens and get different effects, but me and you are stuck with the lens we have. just practise and you will understand how to get the best out of the lens. I just grabbed 2 shots from my flickr account to show DOF. also, I found that my S5600 has better DOF with macro on! also your shots do have a decent DOF and there are also plenty of tutorials out there on the subject

thanks candy you are a star m8

I hear you re: drawbacks and understand the fact we are stuck with our lens etc...

The second image I posted was with macro on, I will have to play about with it more..

I did not realise that my shots had "decent" DOF on them, I thought they could have been out of course tbh, thats were my newabity comes into I guess. I would like to get to grips with this method as I think it has great potential, obvisiously I wont stop practicing until I am confident enough to realise which of my shots are decent and what not...

candy, if you had to list my images in best DOF how would you rank them?

This was all before your suggestions also...

Thanks a lot and btw if you have any further recommendations re: s9600 then I would love to hear them...

Appreciate your comments and the time you have taken to clarify..

thanks a lot :)

I stick with AF, but use aperture mode to get the aperture down to the lowest it will go. keep the light decent and you will be able to get a better DOF.

b has the best dof but I reckon you could get it better with a bit more space between the pens...also try a tripod to keep the camera steady and also raw mode will help a little

cool ta, it all helps...

do you generally try and use AF with this camera or do you sometimes have to resort to mf?

I find the fstop really limiting but the shutter speed is great as it goes up to 1/4000

Also did you notice if you zoom in at f2.8 , as you increase your zoom in the aperture automatically goes higher.. Again probably the camera limitations...I am really chuffed though, its a great bit of kit to start learning with :)

can you recommend any alternative tut's other then morguefile and photoxels?

thanks a lot really appreciate your good advice :)

at higher zooms the aperture will go up, that's the lens design for you. S9600 is a great all round camera, love my S5600 but will go up to something better this year, probably a 400d
will have a look for a tutorial or 2 for you :-)
