Full Fibre Router Recommendation 2.5g vs 1g ports

I'm looking at switching my 900 full fibre from Cuckoo over to Onestream as it's £20 a month cheaper.

However during the sign up process it turns out the prices Onestream advertise don't include a router, it's a monthly extra charge of £5/6.

So figured I can just put that money towards buying a better router, instead of paying them a monthly fee that works out a lot more than the router actually costs.

I just upgraded my PC and have a 2.5g ethernet port on it. Is it worth spending the extra for a router with a 2.5g port? I'm thinking that I don't really need it if the internet connection is only 900 anyway?

I see quite a few of them only have one faster port as well, so not exactly sure what the point is if the rest of the network is all on 1g ports?

Onestream? Have you looked them up at all and seen the feedback? They literally have a 1 star review on Google :p

If red flags needed a prime example of a provider to avoid, this would be it.

As for the router, a 2.5GbE router is totally not needed for even a full 1Gb line. At 900 (assuming Onestream actually deliver the full 900....) will net you an actual 940Mbps on average. That's still over 110MB/s raw download rate.

The connection is all coming through the same cables right?

I had already clocked the free trials of things you need to cancel and as mentioned I got surprised by the fact there's an extra monthly charge for a router.

I'll take a look at the reviews.

They charge you extra for everything basically, hidden costs left and right. Check out the reviews they are rather eye opening. And cancelling with them appears to be a challenge as well. If Onestream provide to your postcode, then way way better providers must do too. Avoid avoid avoid.

Not quite. They still have to run the network between said cables and the wider internet. As well as arrange appointments with third-parties that own the intermediary equipment for fault-finding.

If you get good 4G/5G so you at least have a backup, go for it :D

Thanks for all the input, I'll give them a wide berth having read the reviews.

Not sure I'll even get a separate router then as the ISP supplied ones have sufficed till now. Won't need to share the connection so 1g ports are fine for my current purposes.

I have just got my self a CWWK small PC with 4 x 2.5Gbe nic, and have put OPNSense on it for my Octaplus/Cityfibre connection. future proof and flexible. and I get the full 900/900 of the connection. The ONT they have supplied is a 1Gbe version so when Cityfibre start rolling out the fater connections as thery are rumoured to then i will need a new ONT to get a faster connection.

Sorry to hijack the thread... Do you mind me asking where you bought this?

Direct from CWWK. Took about 10 days to arrive from China. I spent Christmas rebuilding it and now have OPNSense running as a VM under ESXi. 2Cpu's assigned to the VM, and its perfect for my needs. Full speed of CityFibre's link all day every day. Looking at running PiHole next, but getting that working wioth DoH / DoT is not straight forward.

That's possibly along the lines of what I was thinking, although I'm not sure whether to virtualize or not and possibly go with Proxmox. I also was thinking of virtualising a Pi hole and my Unifi controller on the box as well although I do have a separate Raspberry Pi to hand. I will have to do some reading as I'm not even sure how PiHole could possibly work with DoH/DoT!

Would be very interested in any updates that you have on you project

I initially ran OPNSense as baremetal and found that it was wasting CPU resource. Since virtualising it and giving only two CPU, I have found no difference in usability, other than I now have loads of spare CPU to use.

There seems to be a growing trend of renting routers. Personally, I think that's outrageous. The company makes their money back in a year and from that point onwards you are giving them something for nothing.
