Full frame systems?

I have used M43 system for a few years, but really want to scratch the full-frame itch.

Overall what system is considered the best these days?

I was looking at the Sony Alpha IV for example.

Lens wise I want a typical 24-70 or 24-105 zoom and a 60mm or better macro.

Noticed both Sony and Sigma Art lenses.

I also have an M43 70-300 zoom but rarely used so not looking immediately for an equivelant, but did see Sony also do a 200-600 lens.

Where are Canon these days with mirrorless?

My last DSLR was the 600D.



One thing I have forgotten between M43 and full frame.

If I use a wide open lens for short DOF, say f2.8 on my M43, am I right in thinking I can get away with maybe F4 on full frame for a similar effect?

As a system, Sony has the widest range of lenses and most matured and due to all the 3rd party lenses, it is also the best value. Cheap it isn’t but it’s cheaper than the competition yet it isn’t behind in quality or tech.

Can't comment on Sony but I think the general consensus is they are the market leaders in terms of spec sheets and performance however it all comes at a price. FWIW Sigma have been absolutely killing it with their lenses this past couple of years so there is certainly the option to go Sony body and pair it with Sigma lenses - I don't think you'll be disappointed.

As for Canon, I recently returned to Canon at the end of last year picking up a R6 mkii in the Black Friday sales and I am very impressed with the system as a whole. My last experience with Canon was a DSLR, more specifically the 6D mkii which was a very poor sensor to say the least but their newer stuff has come on leaps and bounds.
The one drawback with Canon is no availability of third party lenses so it's Canon's own lenses or nothing. In Canon's defence their lenses are excellent and their 'L' series glass is as outstanding as always, however I'd love to have some of the aforementioned Sigma lenses.

As it’s a fresh start, I don’t mind who I go with.

Getting a bit more specific with lenses.
Any thoughts on these two:

Sony FE 90mm f2.8 Macro G OSS Lens​

I know these are not the cheapest options, but it’s intended to be a big one off purchase. 50th Birthday basically!!
There also seems to be a Sigma Art 24-70? As you say above they have acquired a good reputation.
Just need to find somewhere local I can go and try out some of these, or at least the body.

Having used the 24-70 2.8 Gm II I can say it’s an excellent lens but what I would suggest that there are a good handful of lenses from third parties such as Sigma and Tamron saving a small fortune with excellent if not sometimes better performance than Sony lenses

You don’t need GM lenses to take good pictures. Not blowing my own horn but you would have a hard time guessing what camera and lens I take my photos with.

Moved from m43 to Lumix FF, initially the S5, now have the S5II and S9. Partly because I was already comfortable with Panasonics UI, the excellent IBIS and partly because they do some crazy deals, especially with Blue Light Discount and bundled lenses.

Worth considering if you're in a similar boat.

£700 for a FF body and a decent lens is a good way to dip your toe in the water.

Sony are best overall now.

I prefer Canon but to buy their good stuff needs a kidney sold to pay for it.

Yeah, you’re right.
It was more of a why not option. The Sigma Art lens seems to be the more sensible option.
Depends also if I decide I want to add a more powerful zoom in the mix as well. Not sure yet it would get used enough.
Never been sure of Tamron. I had a couple with my DSLR about 25-20 years ago. They were OK. They seem decent on paper but I tend to think if they are priced that competitively, where are they cutting costs.

What DO you use then?
seen enough of your photos to see what can be done.
I actually do have a very old screw mount I use with my M43. All manual and very nice, but it is wearing out a bit.

My M43 system is Olympus but I’ll check out the Panasonic as another option.
I really want to go with a system though that is only likely to expand in lineup and in this instance I am fortunate to have a decent budget.
