Hi

Can I fit a full height 5.25 tape drive in and Dell poweredge SC1420 server?

I've tried looking at the online documentation but it isn't really clear.

Best bet is to have a look inside the bays. If you have 2 5.25" bays without anything between them, then it'll fit

You'll need to remove the optical drive. Some cases have bars, supports or plates between the bays which would prevent it from going in, some dont. I dont think Dell's do because of the tool-less brackets they use, but if there is anything there obstructing you'll need to cut it or bend it to get a drive to fit.

Alternatively, get an external enclosure?

Edit - looks like it'll be fine - just attach the green brackets to the side of the tape drive and it should go in

It looks like Dell classes the bottom 5.25" bay as a hard-drive bay to allow the machine to support four drives. They then supply a 5.25" to 3.5" adapter.

The machine should take a full height tape drive without having to remove the optical drive (unless you do have four hard-drives).

There is a service note for this machine that says if you fit four hard-drives or a tape drive you should have the second processor cooling fan and shroud installed even if you only have a single processor.

Thanks for the infrmation.

We only have 2 hard drives in there.

I will have a proper look at it this weekend.

I have another question!

I have a dedicated SCSI card for this tape drive and a scsi cable with 6 heads on. Do I still need to use a 'scsi termintator' with this cable if it's only going to be connected to the tape drive?

Some cables have inbuilt terminators though, if theres a block on the end of the cable then chances are it is

The cable I have doesn't have a terminator built in.

Do I need a passive or active terminator?

Unless the drive is really old you'll want an active terminator.

If the drive is old then it may have onboard termination that can be enabled.

Details of the card, cable and tape drive would allow for a definitive answer.

HP Ultrium 960 tape drive
Adaptec 39320A scsi card
6 Head SCSI U320 U160 LVD Cable

I already have an active termiantor. Will it be ok to use?

If it's LVD then you will need an active terminator.

The terminator you have will probably work and it won't do any damage if it doesn't. Terminators (and SCSI kit in general) normally have their rating marked on them somewhere either as text or the appropriate SCSI symbol.

If you want to do things neatly then the OEM rounded single drop cable with built in terminator is currently listed on that well know auction site for under £10 delivered. Search for WJ511.

I'm having problems :(

I fitted the drive & scsi card in to the server.

The problem is that the scsi card is not picking up the tape drive. The tape drive powers up fine.

I have used a cheap u320 cable from ebay which has 6 'heads'.

Head 1 is going to port A of the scsi card, head 5 to the tape drive and head 6 has an active termiantor plugged in to is.

Should I try a better cable?

I would try the following...

1. Make sure HostRAID is disabled.
2. Make sure the SCSI IDs are set to something sensible (not clashing).
3. Try a different cable and/or terminator.

For reference your terminator should be marked with one of the following symbols:

DTSCSI_LVD.gif
DTSCSI_LVDSE.gif

It's also worth noting that even if a tape drive isn't listed when the card initialises it can still be visible from the OS.

1) already done
2) already done
3) new cable ordered

I noticed these 2 errors in the server report:-

The device 'Hewlett Packard LTO Ultrium-3 drive' (SCSI\Sequential&Ven_HP&Prod_Ultrium_3-SCSI&Rev_G66D\6&376048a6&0&030) disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal.

The device, \Device\Tape0, is not ready for access yet.
