I was driving home from work yesterday when I saw a guy on a scooter.....in full race leathers.

It was the proper marlboro full racing leathers and matching race helmet with black visor jobbie.

Is this common? First time i've seen anyone on a scooter in leathers!

Edit: perhaps he was having work done on his normal bike and the garage gave him their courtesy scooter!

Most sensible thing to wear imo. Doesn't stop it looking daft thought.

The local scooter rats round here tend to wear tracky bottoms and a T-shirt. when summer comes i'm sure they'll revert to the usual shorts and T-shirt

I've ridden a scooter (well a honda cub) in leathers. Admitedly they were just black leather jeans and knackered old leather jacket but I have them so why risk riding a scooter in jeans?

it's the best plan imho

yea, that is true, I used to wear a Alpinestars jacket and jeans on my gilera 125 but that did 85mph. I have seen guys on 50's in full leathers which although sensible 34mph really isn't fast.Jeans and a jacket is fine!
a few years ago I used to get the **** taken out of me for wearing my "power ranger suit" on my RS125 which was 100mph+(just about) they didnt understand what it was really for tho which was going round corners really really fast and beating any max power boy that came along off the lights. You just had to hope a corner came along before you hit 85 or else you were screwed! good fun!

34mph isnt fast on the bike, but after being thrown off your bike by a faster moving vehicle 34mph would be very fast and painful!

Thinking about it, my dads friend died on his bike at about 30mph. Having said that He was on an R1 and wearing full leathers(bike landed on hime after a car pulled out). hence why my RVF will be my last road bike and I'm only 20, I loved my RVF and My 125 but if I get annother bike it will be track day only. too many ****holes trying to kill you on the road.
You dont hear of many scooter riders dying though and there is a lot of them! Most with the required shorts and t shirt!

As a few people have said some scooters will go damn fast, theres a few modded 125cc runners and typhoons round here pushing 100mph and the acceleration on a standard 125cc scooter will beat most everyday cars and bikes to its top speed, so they are still very dangerous.

I'd was given a DG125 as a "courtesy" bike - and yes I did feel a bit like I was in a bit of overkill with my full leathers on. To be honest it is a sensible thing to do when on a bike. Even 34mph is enough to take a decent amount of skin off your body and it'll hurt without the right gear on.

As for people taking the mickey out of him, he'll be having he last laugh when he gets up from an accident whilst the others are crying for their mothers.

He's going to look like a dork no matter what he wears on a scooter anyway, may as well look like dork while remaining as safe as possible :)

used to see a bloke on an Aprillia 125 scooter in 2 piece leathers, Arai Doohan rep with dark visor, but only in winter. Come spring then he'd riding his ZX9. Dont blame him for wearing leathers on the scoot, even though he did look funny.

Kids wearing race leathers on their 50cc mopeds winding the throttle open and closed make me go HAAAAAAAAAGHHAHAHA!!!!!! HAAAAAAAAAGHHAHAHA!!!!!! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! HAAAAAGH HA HA HA HA!!! AHA, AHA, HAHAHAHAHA!!! Oooooh starting to hurt now.

Stupid kids.

A modified small frame vespa would be surprisingly hard to catch around short tight cornered streets no matter what you were chasing it with. A few of my mates were scooter boys and with a bit of tuning there fairly rapid. The new Gilera scooters are quick too.

Maybe the leathers and black visor are part of courtesy deal so no-one can identify the rider. ;)

Smart kids, actually.

My mum was a nurse in the plastic surgery ward in Glasgow. She said that when the motorcycle (anything two-wheeled with an engine was a suicycle to her) accident victims werre brought in, there were three categories:

1. Wearing helmet and leathers - give 'em a check for whiplash and a concussion and release them.

2. Helmet but no leathers - send 'em straight to the plastic surgery ward for years' worth of painful skin grafts.

3. No helmet - send 'em straight to the morgue. There's no helping them.

Oh, and these results were regardless of the speed the bike was travelling at..........
