Full/Quick Format new backup drive?

However, I need some extra advice.

I bought a new HGST Deskstar 8TB hard drive for use as a media backup drive.

Should I do either A or B below:

A) Full Format (GPT Partition)

or ...

B) Quick Format and run a disk checking software (please suggest to me - I do own Hard Disk Sentinel), unless you recommend using Western digitals Life diagnostic Tool instead or something else?

With any new disk, I do full and then wait.

It runs a full disk check whilst doing it, better safe than sorry

I read that checkdisk wasn't as good as manufacturers tools. Was I mislead?
