I'm buying from scratch because I've been using a laptop for the last 2 years but I want to get a PC again for gaming and working on (office and CAD mainly).

Am I missing anything?

Looks good, I would change the E8600 to a Q6600, the SP F1 to a WD6400AAKS (just to save a few quid). Finally, consider a Corepad Magma instead of the Icemat. It is also made of glass, but is around half the price of the Icemat. You might want to get a cheaper display if you are not too concerned with image quality and can live with something good (unless you are going to be doing pro work).

Cheers the for advice guys.
Lamboman; Why would you choose the Q6600 over the E8600? I was under the impression that the dual core CPUs are better for gaming and apps in general.
Is there any cheaper 24" that you would recommend?

I wouldn't go for a 24" that expensive, the keyboard as said before looks crap aswell...
Got a 26" iiyama here which is absolutely great! was 300 Euros here in the netherlands, add some UK-people-get-owned-money to it and it should be even cheaper then the 24" you picked. Also a 520W Corsair should be enough to power that machine I think. I'd switch to a E8400 for saving some extra cash.

New spec, the bits I'm not sure about are the CPU (Q6600 or E8400?) and monitor (although this hyundai looks really good). Cheers again for the help guys.

I just noticed you have two optical drives, you only need one! The writer will also play ;) EDIT: Oh and make sure it's SATA ;)

If you are not sure about the Hyundai ask in the Monitor forum! I don't know much about these monitors, maybe someone else here does?

I thought the RAM I chose was the mutts nuts?

On the subject of the bloody keyboard:I don't really like it but I also don't like any of the gaming keyboards because they either look like a 5 year old designed them or cost about £60 which seems a bit ridiculous to me. If anyone has a suggestion for one under £30 then please let me know.

Optical drives I just chose any two to get an idea for price so I'm not sure if they're any good or not. I want two so that I can copy discs more easily though.

Slightly over but a much better system.

especially as you are doing cad you want quad. Apart from gfx card will be totally silent.

If you are going for a 24" monitor, you may want to consider 2 x 4850 crossfire with that board.

If you are ocing, get the cheapest e8*00, if not the e8600. In fact, I would probably recommend the Q9550.

Those two choices would up the total of what you listed by around £100, but you certainly shouldn't be disappoitned with any performance and it should last you a while.

Would that give better performance than a single 4870?

I think I'm going to go with the E8400, although the Q6600 seems interesting.

Just to clarify one thing:
I'm not really buying this system for CAD work, I'm fairly confident whatever spec I choose will be more than enough for my applications as a mech-eng student.

DDR2 RAM in a DDR3 board? ;)

Also, go dual core for gaming. And stick to a 24" screen, better to have quality rather than size!

Doh done it again..

he's also doing cad which quad core and 28" is better. These screens are also well respected and are very good. Price does not always mean better qaulity.

If it was just gaming an E8XX would be better but it's not.

Fixed mistake and under budget buy changing psu

I've looked at screens in shops and decided that 24" is the ideal size. 28" is too big for my room to be honest.

I don't think there's many changes I could make to improve the second spec now. Just the CPU that I'm unsure of really.

I'll be rather chuffed if I can get it all for £1100 'n' all.

Acidhell: Like I said, CAD isn't a priority for this system as I reckon that whatever I buy will run Solidworks just fine, I mean even my laptop does.

get an e8600 then.
Also the There's a dell 24" for cheaper albeit pre order.
Get an x38 board as this allows true CF
