I was looking for a cheap system for capturing video from an HDMI capture card but that didn't quite work out as the card from HK gave massive interference issues... But I was looking for a cheap system
Gepetto, thanks AGAIN, gave me a freebie
An old S775 system with a "crap" G33M-S2 mobo, two unmatched pairs of Ram, a 7300LE Nvidia card and in a Coolermaster case. Nitrogon cooler. Just the cost of a 40 mile drive (and getting stuck on the M25!). Oh, E7300 dual core CPU.
So, it didnt do a lot when I found the cap card was dire... but I discovered it could run AROS. Nice, since not all hardware is supported. I overclocked the E7300 from 2.66 to 3.33 just cos you can... but no more.
Then sourced an 8400GS off eBay.. Mainly cos the 7300 had a noisy old fan and the 8400GS is passive AND runs AROS. Under £10.
Then a Xeon E5430 from vian_siu for £10 with a free S771-775 adapter. Gotta be worth a go...
Well, it was fun for a "mature" overclocker because fitting the adapter needs a magnifying glass.. but with tweezers and a 2nd pair of glasses all done. Socket modded with Stanley knife (blunt, couldn't find my normal one!).
Convinced I was killing mobo and CPU, I re-assembled.
Bingo. It lived. So now to overclock.
Well I forgot to mention that while I was waiting for the E5430 I turned down the multiplier and upped the FSB and found the (everyone says its crappy) G33M-S2 board was an insane board. 450FSB easy with 0.1 added voltage (not sure I needed it) to the GMCH/FSB settings. 460 it didnt like. But the Ram is at 920 then and is rated to 800 only.
So, come Xeon fitting. 8x multi. 450FSB = 3.6GHz!!
3.7 was possible but its limits of the board and multiplier. So started to drop the voltages.
All at default except FSB and Ram... 3.6GHz quad core, for £10... Insane!
Dunno what I'll now do with it but it was fun and cheap and enabled by OCUK Forums! Thanks to Gepetto's generosity of course. Leaving feedback for vian_siu from MM now as well.
