Assembled my cheap ****e pc. Something smells odd (chemical/plastic smell).

Is that coming from the cpu baking the termal paste or something like that?

Thanks for the advice <3

Just having a stab in the dark, but some heatsinks come with a piece of plastic that covers the base of the heatsink to protect it, did your heatsink have one of these, and if so, did you remove it??

If you could install something like CoreTemp to check your temps then tell us what your temps are that would be helpful.

My latest PSU, a Cooler Master 550w, had an unusual smell to begin with. Kinda like a dentists waiting room. I know it was the PSU because all the other bits had been running for some time. Couple of days later it was gone.

Ive never fitted a new air CPU cooler, does the manufacturing of these leave a slight grease/oil residue on the heatsink? If so, will just be that burning off.

put your nose in and sniff each component to see which smells stronger, in my opinon i think its the psu working too hard

if you have enough thermal compound id suggest you taake the heatsink of, clean it down with an alcohol based cleaner (there are specific ones found on computing stores). Reapply the thermal paste the usual way taking care to wipe off any overfill. If this doesn't solve it then the issue will be with the PSU going or a capaciter getting to much power somwhere
