Funny static

Getting quite concerned about this, and after approximately 40 hits on the sound subforum I've had no suggestions at all, just hoping posting under general hardware might catch someone who's had this problem before:

Just finished assembling new PC two days back, but i get funny static on my headphones when:
-I'm scrolling in certain websites, but only certain websites, (such as this one)
-Playing certain games seems to cause static that changes pitch/volume depending on the colours being used by the screen.

Please don't tell my I've fritzed something.
I remember having this problem with another machine before, something to do with the way the system power was being distributed.

Using a wireless mouse, (if that's the reason behind scrolly webpage static)
Headphones are coming in on a line through my Cyborg V7 but am getting same problem when connecting to case front audio as well.

Any help is appreciated help

make sure non of your audio cables are running parrallel to any power/data cables :)

(Including front panel cables inside the case, and all cables externally)

If they are running physically parallel (like hellarda said) then it can pick up interference. Try and keep them as far apart as you reasonably can.

Power routing seems fine, I'll try and get an image up to see if we're in accord.
Is this the sole issue or could it be a sign of something a bit more sinister, just in case this doesn't work out.

It could be a few things and I am no expert. I did get interference once in my car though. I was using my phone to play songs through the head unit and the cable I was using had no shielding, every time the car revved up you could hear it through the head unit.

So it is worth checking the simple things first lol.

agreed, i've known too often where people check all the complicated stuff first to find out they didn't switch it on at the wall or something
pictures just uploading to photobucket....just so i can get a second opinion.
i disconnected all the external audio leads and plugged my headphones straight into the rear panel, same problem, so i think its safe to assume the problem is occuring inside the case

hope you can see this clearly enough
front audio lead runs from front, past top fan and plugs in just underneath the bottom corner of the H60 radiator.
The 8 pin power is kinda close to it (one that dangles over the RAM)

(I know its not the best cable tidying in the world but it wasn't easy in this case)

I know its a pain, but can you take the audio cable out (so its still connected) so that it is no where near anything, the fan might be doing it, otherwise start to turn off wireless things till it stops.

i would give this a go but i'm 1/2way through copying a BIG file over LAN, so i'll do that when its finished.
Turning of wireless mouse (only wireless kit) did nought :(.
Thanks so far Dandos :D

No problem (its not just me though :D)

The chances are it is just interference, trying to find it is going to be the pain!

Just a thought, how is your monitor connected to the PC? If it is with a HDMI cable is it also carrying sound?

You said in the OP that when you are playing games it will do it with certain colours, it could be from the GPU?

When I had my antec 300 I got awful static through the fron panel headphone jack. It is just a problem with the case through there. As soon as I moved to my Lancool K-62 it went away. However, it is now back in my 800D. That is just due to poor quality cables used by antec. However, you say you get the interference around the back port too? Well I am currently dealing with the same problem ever since I changed my 5850. By any chance do you get a buzzing during some games (such as crysis or mafia II)?

i thought as much concerning the GPU, brighter colours (closer to white) produce a higher pitch than darker colours.
I'm using a DVI->VGA converter with a VGA cable, cos BenQ are cheap and only gave me VGA cable for a DVI monitor (unimpressed face), so i can't see that would be a problem.

strongest thing I've had the chance to run on here so far is BC2, and that made some interesting music :D. The 'noisiest' game so far for some reason is minecraft, and just on the main menu.
Will try removing the front audio cable as suggested by dandos in about 3hrs, when the copy is finished

That (in theory) should be fine then, but it still could be the GPU.

Does your GPU have a HDMI out? If so then your card is carrying sound as well regardless of what cable you are using. You could try and turn the sound off to the GPU, should be in the settings somewhere, or just reseating it. It might even by worth trying to change what slot it is in (if you can).

yes, it has HDMI, can't really change the slot, cos the other x16 only runs at x4. Would disabling the sound to GPU be an OS side option or is that going to be in the BIOS? Becoming more convinced its got something to do with the GPU, as the interference is only occuring when doing something that needs the GPU to do a bit of work. (ie, games, and to a lesser extent scrolling php websites)
