Funnyist IT Support Issue Raised.

I think HR is catching on these days, even for smaller firms. Competency testing for IT used to be limited to keyboard skills and maybe some Excel, when I started. But recently we get more and more requests for a quick comprehensive IT test which covers all the bases. Saying that you have 'excellent IT skills' and actually having them can often be two mutually exclusive occurrences.

I agree with clade on that it is often a necessity to educate, as well as support your users, but it isn't always possible due to time and money constraints. Furthermore, there is a golden rule to be aware of for first line support: never do a user a favor - it will come to bite you in the backside later. I'm a fairly friendly IT tech. so I get burned quite often on that one. xD

CPD sessions for users who feel they are useless at IT. ;) I used to do favours and I have now learnt to keep my mouth shut. I don't tell anyone I do IT now.

If you really want to have some fun with first line support you can change the message on LCD displays on printers. White toner empty is a classic, I managed to get someone from a helpdesk really angry with a user over that one, so much so they went 10 floors up to visit the printer and then came back down stunned that it really did say that.

HP printers are nice and easy to go, simple google search will tell you how.

Also good prank to play when leaving a company, you could for example set up some scheduled tasks to change printers displays for the next 6 months, not that I have ever done such a thing

Literally just had 3 good ones from a teacher/students in an IT suite. Was called in the by teacher...

1.
Stu: Its not working at all?
Me: Try switching it on?
Stu: How do I do that?
Me: Press the button on the front
Stu: Its working now.

2.
Stu: PC is on but cant see anything on the screen.
Me: Is the monitor on?
Stu: Its working now.

and the best one....

3.
Stu: Its all in capitals so it wont type in my password. Shift is stuck down.
Me: Yes you are right. Maybe turn caps lock off?
Stu: Thanks

The worst thing is these teachers are educating our children and cant even switch on a PC.

Indeed...It's not things like that that annoy me though really...It's just general common sense issues.

Oh, apparently people here don't know how to use scanners
