fuse rating on logitech Z5500s...

Was just dismantling my Z5500s to shift them downstairs... noticed that the plug said that it was 'fitted with a 5A fuse' ...

thought that seems a bit low considering the power these things spit out...

then thought that maybe I had mixed up my PS2 or DVD player connector with the logitech connector (since they both have the same female connector) and have been using the wrong fuse for these things

...don't know if that would explain the horrible 'POPPING' I get sometimes when the speakers are on and e.g. when the compressor of the mini-fridge in our room turns on..

could someone with the above speakers please confirm what kind of fuse the plug's fitted with?

Should I be using 13A?

cheers!

5amp is right and the popping is because they are sensitive to crap on the ac line and is unfortunately normal, plugging them into a good filtering surge protector will stop the popping though

IIRC there is one in *a store* on display (ive seen it in loads of stores so i presume it must be in all of them) which filters out all the noise and you can play about with it, aka listen to it with it off and then with it on. However iirc, it was something crazy like £150! lol

i was hoping this could be stoped, the sub does it so loud, scares the crap out of me. happens when lights are switched on/off downstairs, the fridge in my room kicks in, anything is plugged in.

i'd say that you have one of the batches which have the defective control unit, mine used to pop prior to it dying altogether and the replacement is A1 ....never get a pop under any circumstance now.

they done it since i had them, which is well over a year

so did mine m8, it was annoying as hell.

anyway you can check on their forums if your serial number is one of the duffers.

I guess mine must be one of the duffers due to the popping/clicking and BANG when some other electrical appliance switches on etc...!

Don't see a point in getting a £150 surge protector filter since it almost costs as much as the unit :-P ... will try and contact logitech support and see what they say...

The Z5500's originally had issues with clicking / popping- a new revision was filtered through that resolved this however. I had a set that made this noise and Logitech replaced them with the revised model- which have been fine ever since.

i found this link

http://logitech-en-emea.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/logitech_en_emea.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3461&p_created=1143645117&p_sid=5pi9Mwjj&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MzQsMzQmcF9wcm9kcz04NDQsMTcsNjQxJnBfY2F0cz0mcF9wdj0zLjY0MSZwX2N2PSZwX3BhZ2U9MQ**&p_li=&p_topview=1

for them to exchange the speakers you need a valid recipt, mine boing 2 years old or something i dont have, and you need to send them your speekers before they issue refund or exchange, so you would be without speakers for a few weeks.

think i will live with my popping

I've had a set replaced by Logitech maybe a year or so ago now because of the 'popping'. It was basically an EMC / grounding issue which a Dutch forum (tweakers.net?) had a massive thread on and some of the folk from there ended up meeting Logitech and showing them the 'DIY' fixes they had devised.
I tried mine downstream of a mains filter and they still popped - they seemed sensitive to the airborne radio frequency noise when light switches, etc., were used so I'd recommend against anyone having too much hope that a mains filter will fix it.
Anyway, what Logitech asked me for at the time was for the old set to be made useless by either smashing the control unit and sending pictures or cutting off and posting them cables. I can't remember if I sent them a copy of my receipt or not now but it would be worth giving them a ring - you'd have nothing to lose!

5 A fuses are just fine. The fuse that was present when I bought the Z5500 has died once. After replacing it with a 5 A fuse from a local electronics store, it hasn't died anymore.

The popping in the speakers is indeed caused by the AC line. When I turn on a lamp while the Z5500 is turned on, it starts popping a few times...
