I might be building an desktop PC for some family friends & have put together some parts. Budget is £300 ex OS:

CPU: Intel Core i3-4130
MoBo: MSI H81M-P33 mATX
RAM: Kingston 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600 MHz
HDD: WD Blue 1TB 7200RPM
Case: Cooler Master N200
PSU: Corsair 430W
Optical: Lite-On iHAS124-04
KB: Logitech K120
Mouse: Gigabyte GM-M6880
OS: Win 7 Pro x64

PC will be used for general home use. Microsoft Office, web surfing, email, youtube, etc. The basics.

I could have gone AMD (A8-5600) but there wasn't really any savings to be had (£20).

Any suggestions?

Thanks

win 8 home, and depending on how much hdd space they need, using the 40 quid saving from getting home version os instead of pro version, you could consider ditching the 1tb hdd for a 240gb ssd

Thanks for the suggestions.
Regarding the OS, I was going to get one of those £50 OEM copies off a well known auction site. That or look for one for sale on a forum.

So all in all that would be £300 for just the parts. That's the amount they want to spend. Otherwise they'd probably get one from the shop (urgh I know).

An SSD could be a good alternative for a mechanical, but I don't know if they'd value the storage more over the increased speed.
