Hi all.

Bit out of touch with hardware at the moment. Just wondering what there is to look forward to in terms of new technology coming up within the next year.

Thinking about buying a new pc but there's nothing that makes me think, woah! That'll be worth getting!

Well there is but not within my budget :D

C2D E6420 @2.7, 2GB Ram, 7800GTX, 450W OCZ ModStream, 250 GB WD, Windows XP.

It is very old school :D I think the reason why I'm farily satisfied is that I've resigned myself to the fact that I can't play new games so I play old one's which it chuggs along quite nicely on.

Need a few games that I'd really like to play thought to force me to shell out £500-600 though...

Fermi which is due at the end of this quarter. 6 core parts from both intel and amd about 6 weeks apart and possibly 8 and 12 core chips by the end of the year.
Hopefully some affordable SSD's too

Think 'affordable' SSDs are top of my list atm, the 6+ core chips will most likely have insane price tags until somewhere in 2011.

To be honest if you changed your GFX card to something like a GTX260 or a Radeon 5770 along with a 4Gb memory kit youd have a very capable gaming rig again.

I don't like upgrading parts. I prefer to do the whole lot. It's a bigger occasion then :D

When you think about upgrading parts I always think of niggly things that I could change as well so it all soon adds up. For example one of my fans has gone and I think I'd need a new psu as well to cope with bigger gfx card. Then more ram would mean windows 7 which I want as well!

Also, will these Fermi be extreme top of the line stuff around the £300-£400 for the card or is there plans for slower clocked cards with the extra cores?

I do like the sound of an SSD as I get quite annoyed when I've not got my music on and I can hear the 'scraping', but they are very expensive atm, especially as I'd want want that's at least 100GB.

Well on the up side of replacing the whole thing you can sell your old system as a full computer without having to go to the hassle of selling all the bits.

Won't get much for it though! I would probably go for a new setup if I could get around £200 for this system so would only need £300 on top of the 200 for a half decent setup....but that isn't going to happen :D

At a guess I'd say you'd probably get £150-170 for it on the bay, i'm guessing your mobo isn't terrible if it's happy at a 2.7GHz OC and people will pay a little more usually for a pre-OCed system.

Rather than stuff the forum with a similar thread, I'll hang onto the coat-tails of this one, if the OP doesn't mind?

I'm getting the upgrade bug too, but my financial situation won't let me do anything til maybe June/July. Apart from Fermi, is there anything else due before then? I've heard talk of six core CPUs, but I'm guessing the high end parts will be released first (and thus be out of my price range)?

Yes and yes really, as I said before I think we're going to be waiting a while for 'affordable' hex-cores and fermis.

According to nvida, a PC will have a dual core CPU with 2 or more graphics cards for processing as CPUs are quote "lame"

According to Intel, A PC will be all on 1 chip, core, GFX, memory, controllers etc.

According to Google, A PC is just to use a web browser.

Any point getting excited by the idea of 6+ core CPU's?
Most people and software don't need 4 cores atm, so I'll not be waiting with baited breath...

'Most' being the important word there, if nothing you personally do makes good use of more than 2 cores then no, it's not worth getting excited.

I wouldn't be looking to get 6 cores, I'm thinking more along the lines of what new tech will be coming out and therefore driving down the prices of existing hardware.
