Future Intel Spec

Well... this is just out of curiosity really. As my upgrade won't happen for a good few months or towards the final third of this year. But I'm falling pretty behind on what's good and what's not.

I'm thinking of getting something like this when the time is right and after the price cuts:
  • Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 2.40GHz
  • Gigabyte GA_965P_DS4 PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
  • OCZ 2GB PC2-6400 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series
  • Scythe Ninja Plus Rev.B Heatpipe CPU Cooler
  • Lian-Li PC-7 PLUS Aluminium Midi-Tower Case - Black

Or is it worth getting the "Asus P5B Deluxe (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2" Motherboard instead?

What's the core differences between the Intel 975 and the Intel 965 chipset? And is it worth getting the 975 over the 965?

I'm gathering this will be quite a decent improvement over my current spec in my sig? Will be flogging the current system for the above.

The core differences as I understand it are that the 975X is a higher end chipset so often has a few more features built in than the 965P, however some manufacturers add in most of the features anyway and the 965P chipset is better at hitting the high FSB speeds which work best when overclocking the lower Conroes in the range (4300, 6300 and 6400). :)

Agreed, the P965 is far the better chipset. DS4 and P5B are both capable clockers.

Ah I see. Well...... we will see in a few months time, thanks for the update though. I decided I wanted a 6600 as it has 4MB cache as opposed to 2MB, as one would assume I'd see a far higher increase in performance in comparison to my current spec. I guess I'll decide on the board when the time comes, if the higher-end boards end up being more value for money - I'd get one, I'm sure it'll be worth the extra features. :p

Problem is nowadays, I just don't have much time to play games although a GTS is £200-£250 + VAT. But it looks like I might need to, as I'm really looking for silence in my new rig and the X1900XT just doesn't cut it. My DFI board is so damn noisy as well.
